Perry Ellis (1940-1986) brought a new look to American
sportswear. One of America’s most popular designers of the 1980s,
Ellis made clothes that were relaxed and unpretentious, yet also
sophisticated and timeless. Often described as an innovator, even as a
maverick, Ellis once said, "I don't make fashion. I make clothes." His
method, which has continued as his legacy, was to take traditional
ideas and make them modern.
In 1980 Perry Ellis launched his first menswear collection.
Following a series of innovative and critically praised collections,
Perry Ellis Portfolio and Perry Ellis America were introduced. Over a
quarter of a century after the launch of Perry Ellis, the designer
name and legend still commands attention. Perry Ellis is one of the
great American fashion brands.
Perry Ellis, originally from Virginia, began his career in
department store retailing. From the start he approached his
merchandising responsibilities in the most innovative way, providing
design ideas to vendors that often lead to best-sellers. It didn't
take long before he was hired away by one of his key resources and
came to New York to begin the second phase of what was to become a
most remarkable career.
After working as a Design Director for a well known
sportswear firm, Perry was given the opportunity to create his own
division, which he named Portfolio. He quickly earned a reputation for
fresh, innovative ideas by creating sophisticated and stylish clothes
that were to become the "new classics" that every woman had to
have.
