Natori, started the company in 1977 after she left her job as the
first female vice president of investment banking at Merrill Lynch.
After a friend sent her hand-embroidered blouses from the Philippines
(her home country), she showed them to a buyer at Bloomingdale’s, who
liked the way they echoed the look of Yves St. Laurent’s peasant
blouses, popular at the time. Natori turned them into night shirts and
they were such a hit that within weeks, she had to set up shop in her
living room! And the rest is history...
