Chat Live with a Bobbi Brown Makeup Artist for Expert Advice
I wanted to look like Cheryl Tiegs when I was 13
years old. She was thin, blue-eyed, and blonde -
the epitome of beauty in the late '60s. I couldn't
have looked any more different - and I spent
a lot of time feeling bad about what I wasn't.
Then I saw Ali MacGraw in "Love Story" and
I finally saw the possibility of my own beauty.
This epiphany impacted how I viewed myself, how
I saw other women and it ultimately led me to my
career as a makeup artist.
Bobbi's love affair with makeup started at an early
age when she discovered her mother's collection
of cosmetics. This passion for beauty continued
into Bobbi's teens and led her to Emerson
College in Boston, where she earned a degree
in theatrical makeup.
After graduating, Bobbi headed for New York City
to fulfill her dream of working as a professional
makeup artist. It was the 80s and the look of the
moment was loud, garish, and overdone. Bobbi
soon became frustrated by the lack of flattering
makeup on the market.
A chance meeting with a chemist at a magazine photo shoot changed everything. Bobbi had the idea to develop a flattering lipstick and it became reality with the creation of Brown Lip Color, nine other brown-based lipstick shades followed soon after. With this set of ten lipsticks, a woman could create an infinite number of wearable shades, just by mixing and blending them.
Bobbi debuted her line of lipsticks in 1991 at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City - and it was clear that a beauty revolution was underway. Women instantly embraced her uniquely flattering makeup and realistic approach to beauty.
As an entrepreneur, wife, and mother of three, Bobbi continues to strike a chord with consumers today. What's the secret behind her success? A philosophy that permeates her business and her life: achieving and maintaining balance, cultivating a positive outlook, and loving yourself the way you are.
