The word jeans likely comes from the French phrase 'bleu de Genes' which means blue Genoa. The fabric, denim probably originated in the French town of Nimes (de Nimes) and that is how denim came to have its name. Originally, jeans were sturdy, well made work pants started by a man named Mr. Levi (Levi Strauss) for miners during the California gold rush. Mr. Levi reinforced the pockets and weak points on the pants with copper rivets. During World War II, U.S. women wore jeans for work in factories where they had been recruited due to the shortage of men who were serving in the military. Up through the 1960's denim was widely worn by inmates in U.S. prisons because they were sturdy and long lasting thus saving some on the prison budget. Jeans have always been favored on farms and ranches in the Western U.S. Beginning in the 1950's jeans began to be popular casual attire after being seen on a few famous actors in films. In the 1960's jeans became even more trendy and in the 1970's had become common casual wear. Nowadays, stylish designer jeans are even worn to to events that require formal attire.
