Cold or Allergy ?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Cold or Allergy ?
By Chloe on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 07:06 pm:

My 12 month old woke at 4am with a runny nose, unable to nurse and quite mifted about it . I gave him saline drops and tried the suction but it wasn't worth the torture. This kid has never been sick . He had a cow's milk protien allergy when he was a newborn and so I stopped eating dairy to nurse him for a few months , then went back to dairy when he was less sensitive (6 mo). Anyway , we just discovered he is a big fan of whole milk yogurt and has been eating it for a few days now. He also has a rash on his tummy. He just woke up from his nap and is having a really hard time breathing, poor little guy. Maybe it's a cold. ,no fever and clear mucus, so I don't know. Hope everyone is safe and sane for the Holiday season.

Could be a cold, only the dairy could be making him a bit more congested. Maybe a vaporizer if you have one will work. I hope he feels better soon!!!

Sounds like a cold to me too. Try to cut back on the dairy until it clears up. It clings to the mucus in the back of the throat and makes it hard to swallow and can cause a choking hazard. Try to push clear liquids (water, juices). And the vaporizer is a really good idea. Get some Vicks belly rub stuff too. That stuff works wonders. And you should be able to find a cough medicine for toddlers over the counter. Read the label and look for his symptoms. Infection most generally carries a fever with it. So no fever try to treat on your own first.

How is he doing? Is he feeling any better? I hope so!!!

Thanks everyone. He is feeling so much better, nursing alot, and we all had a great Christmas, even though my dh and I both came down with a cold too(just a little one for me, because Mom can't get sick, but that's another discussion), so that mystery is solved. Grandma suggested the Vick's and it did help. Unfortunately, the vaporizer, which is less than a year old,is not working, pretty bummed about that. I guess we wait a few months and try again with the dairy. It certainly did not help the situation but it was a cold. His first cold :( I guess he has to build his own little immune system sometime.

That is good to hear. One thing about kids. No matter what you do they get sick that is just they way it goes. Has little to do with anything other than the fact that they are kids. They are like little bug catchers.

Chloe,

My doctor tells me the easiest way to tell if it is allergies is to pull down on their lower eyelid and if it is really red that is a sign of allergies, and when I mean red I mean fire engine red. Dh, and two dds have terrible allergies. Just thought I'd throw that in so you have something to look for next time.
