Congested Child

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Congested Child
By Dananivyboo1 on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 09:44 am:

I was just wondering if there is anything else I can do for my congested ds (18months) who has been battling the flu for 7 days now. Today is day 6 of 10 that he is on antibiotics and the docs says that the medicine should get rid of the congestion. I'm not really convinced its already day 6 and its keeping him up at night and hes extremely cranky! He is drinking fluids a lot. The tylenol keeps him from coughing but the doc said by Friday we should have been weanign him from that since his 103-105 fever finally went down. Not sure if there really is anythign else to do. Any suggestions??
Sleepless family...

Do you have a cold mist vaporizer? Did your Dr. prescribe anything for the actual congestion? I'd check with a pharmacist, there are OTC things you can give to little ones for congestion. And if nothing else, what about Vicks Vapo Rub?

Hope he feels better soon!

Since he is so little I would call the doctor to see what the doctor says.

Is he too young for pedicare? I don't know....

I wouldn't give him anything except what the doctor says.

It definitely must be the sleepless nights that I have not even thought about the vaporizer. When I mentioned that to my dh too he was like DUH!!!! We will try that otherwise he is due for another follow up in 3 days. We all just need some rest!
The doc says the medication he is on should clear the ear infection, bladder infection and congestion.

Thanks guys!

I would take him back to the dr (insist that he is seen). Don't want to scare you, but that can easily turn into pneumonia. If it's the flu, it may be viral and anitbiotics won't help. He might have a viral pneumonia. Just get him checked! They'll send you for a chest xray if they feel its a concern. I've done those many times with my two boys! :)

I've talked to my pediatrician several times about Timmy who is also 18 months old. He's had cough and congestion since Thanksgiving.

Try elevating his mattress a little bit with a towel or blanket. I know they move alot but even for a little while this might help.

Be sure and use the vaporizor.

How about letting him come into the bathroom while you run a hot shower. The steam may help him loosen up some.

Okay and since everyone has been there, I'm hoping this isn't too gross. Use the old blue nose sucker. Nobody likes it but better out than in.

Vicks vapor rub underneath his pajamas and clothes might help keep him a little looser. I hate the smell of it but I do have to say that it does help.

Those are my thoughts for now.

Thanks! When we were at the hospitol last week the chest X-ray was the first thing they took, then urine, and blood. They really didnt find much else. When we took him for his follow up his own pediatrician said the ear infection was clear..that was 2.5 days after he was in the hospitol.

THe vaporizer has pretty much worked, plus warm baths. So now what happens to the phlegm he just keeps coughing???

Of course adults can cough it out of them, but its just sitting there with him. Any thoughts on that??

He has a follow up tomorrow again.
