Has anyone found a good fix/treatment for cradle cap??

By Sunny on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 04:15 pm:

I am searching my memory as the only one of my kids to get it was my oldest (and that was 15 yrs ago!) LOL

If I remember, I was told to gently massage the scalp (or was that gently scrub?) while washing his hair and then comb his hair with a baby comb (or a thin-tooth comb). It worked for me.

I have heard that using adult shampoo gets rid of it! I learned this when my friend had her baby, and my boys were older, so I never got to try it personally, but my friend did and she said it worked!

I remember using a very gentle shampoo and then rubbing a bit of baby oil on the encrustations to soften them so they could be removed. You have to be careful when combing to remove them to be sure they are loosened from the skin so you don't hurt the skin. I also remember that the son who had it outgrew it fairly quickly.

Here is a link to a UK (United Kingdom) medical site - the first site in the google list I found that is NOT selling something. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/cradlecap.htm They suggest olive oil, but I would rather use baby oil. And they suggest the oil at night, comb in the morning after the oil has had a chance to work, and then a mild baby shampoo. Sounds good to me.

I used oil, and did it the way Ginny just posted. I bought an unscented baby oil, which was basically a veggie oil. Worked like a charm.

olive oil works miracles!!!! Also, I didn't comb out the flakes, I just put the olive oil on before he went to bed & then leave it, put a hat over it & wash it in the morning. once I switched to olive oil & stopped trying to comb the stuff out it got better.

I used olive oil when she was an infant. But then it came back really bad. DD's got so bad, I even wrapped celophane around her head to help let the oil soak in. She was one or two when it got this bad. It helped, but was not the answer for her.

Now I shampoo her about once a month with Head and Shoulders as maintanence. It started working immediately after I started using it when it was really bad. I had to use it several times before it went away.

I used Baby Oil on oldest DD she was the only one to get it. I would rub it in her hair through out the day. Made her hair oily but it helped.

Amy,

Brushing the babies hair in circles several times a day to stimulate the scalp works well. :)

Our doctor gave us his own home remedy. He said to use the little scrubby brush they give you in the hospital and a couple drops of dish soap. Scrub it gently but firm (if thats possible lOL). We did it and it worked!! Just be careful not to get the dish soap in the eyes.

I used Neutrogena shampoo (just watch the eyes) and then rubbed baby oil on his scalp and "brushed" his hair (well- mostly massaged his scalp) with a lice comb (they have really fine teeth).

I don't even remember. That was too long ago. I think I gently combed and rubbed when shampooing. I can't remember if used any oil or not. I remember my kids having it to some degree, though.

Johnson and Johnson baby oil gel, rub a little bit in to scalp

I had a shampoo I ordered from the Natural Baby Catalog. I bought it because it was so gentle for babies. I was thrilled when it eliminated my son's cradle cap.

I can not remember the brand name of it but it is called Cradle Cap Treatment, it's in a 3oz bottle the bottle is greenish blue. You put in on the baby's head and gentally massage the scalp. Then you comb on the hair. Wash as uasaul and comb again this worked really well for DD I have recently started useing it again with her at 12.5 months...I have also heard of people using the Tgel shampoo form Netrogina as mentioned above...
Good Luck!

Olive Oil!! I gently massaged it all over and he fell asleep in my arms. You're not really supposed to, but I loosened it with my fingernail very gently and it worked perfectly. Then I used a fine tooth comb to pull it out of the hair and shampooed him with lavender baby wash . He slept through the whole thing. I think I did two treatments and it was gone.
