Smushed in the sling?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Smushed in the sling?
By Amyk on Thursday, December 11, 2003 - 06:14 pm:

Hi there -

I just started to put my 3 month old in a baby sling - he seems to like it - but he seems so smushed in there. I'm assuming that little babies are flexible little pretzels - but I'd like some feedback from other baby sling users, etc.

Thanks!

I remember thinking the same thing. Everything I read says the baby feels cozy like that. And that your baby seems to like it only confirms that. He'd let you know if he was uncomfortable. :)

I always felt the same way. I was afraid they couldn't breathe. I rarely used it.

I opted for a Snugli rather than the sling. I loved it and so did my kids when they were infants. I say as long as they can breathe and aren't squirming, they're fine. :)

They say baby like to be wrapped tightly. That that is what it is like in the womb and it comforts them. Is he crying when he is in it??? If not I wouldn't worry about it. I am sure he is fine. So many people use them I am sure if it were and issue they would not still be using them... AND 3 months already..... My gosh time is flying way to fast...

I tried the sling and ds hated it. We used the bjorn baby carrier instead. He like that.

My second son LOVED the sling- AND being smushed. It's a little scary to use at first though because you feel like you are smothering them! It was the only thing that would calm him down at times. He was a very colicky one!

Little babies love to be smushed! At least mine did! It reminds them of when they were in the womb!

Another idea....the sling can be used many ways to hold the baby. When my son was about three months I took him face out, crossed his little legs and sat him in the sling. His head should be right between your boobs, his little face looking outward. Mine loved this and stayed this way for about 3 months. Also the la leche people were great help for me getting that sling positioned right. I had it for all kids, but only used it with the last.

My DD always looked so squished in the sling! LOL! But, my DH LOVED it and it fit him great. My DD always loved it when he had her in it. Never really for me though. Not sure what I was doing wrong. I did LOVE the Baby Bjorn carrier though. :)

I only had a snugli, which I ended using with my younger daughter more than my older daughter. It was wonderful for holding the baby when the older daughter was playing in the playland at McDonald's.
