20 Month Old's Eating Habits

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: 20 Month Old's Eating Habits
By Angellew on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 - 02:39 pm:

From the day she started eating "real" food, my DD has not been picky at all! She would try anything and had a good appetite! Now, all of a sudden, she's picky about what she eats (woudn't turn her nose up at hot dogs, pizza, chicken and steak), but everything else is a battle! There are also days (getting more and more frequent) that she doesn't want to eat at all!!

I've been here long enough to know what you are all going to say, I hope... it's normal, she won't starve... etc. I guess I just need to hear it again!! Is this normal of the age and just a phase????

It is definitely normal, Angela. My grandson turned two in June, and his eating habits have been similar to your dd's for several months now. He ate a good variety of foods up until then, but now he is extremely picky. Most days he eats nothing except for some fruit, a few bites of cereal, and maybe a few bites of hot dog or pizza. He does drink plenty of milk and juice. I have tried limiting the amount I give him to drink, but he still doesn't eat any better.

NORMAL! :)

An article here...

My child hardly ever eats but seems to be growing fine. Should I worry?

Ditto....if she gets hungry, she'll eat. :)

Very normal. Up until 2 they grow very very fast and they eat more often. After two it starts slowing down a bit and they don't need as much food. Then as she enters growth spurts you will notice that she will be hungrier and probably sleepier. It is so normal. What I did was keep healthy things around for her to snack on as she wanted them through out the day and I put less on her plate at meal time figuring she would ask for more if she was hungry.

We called it "living on air" because they sure didn't seem to be eating enough to live on. The same child who barely ate as a toddler, except once in a while, is a garbage disposal at 11, since she is in an adolescent or pre-adolescent growth spurt.

Yes that is very normal. My 2nd child is 20 months but not in Kindergarten, and eats the same way. Most days I have to tell this child, to eat. This child eats next to nothing. Sometimes I feel I should follow the same diet and I would be skinny. :)

Sorry I have to post ANON as Im your Secret Santa!

I went through the same thing--and still am in fact. Don't worry about it. I also brought it up with the Dr. and she states that at this age, they are developing their own unique likes and dislikes and experimenting. If she wants to eat PBJ sandwiches 5 days in a row-- let her. If she wants nothing but mac and cheese for 2 weeks..let her. Let her have what she wants (within reason. IE: halloween candy for dinner 2 days in a row is probably more to swindle you to any explorative effort on her unconscious part)
My dd was so particular she did it in food groups. She'd eat nothing but vegetables for a couple weeks. Then she'd switch to beef. Then to carb/starch (rice/pasta) then to chicken..
But it's all normal.

Thanks everyone!!! Sometimes, even when you know it's probably okay, you just need to hear it from everyone else! She didn't eat a morsel yesterday... no breakfast or lunch. Just drinking her milk, juice and water. Then, woke up from her nap asking for "umms". I managed to get a fair amount of chicken soup into her (heavy on the carrots and celery) before she turned off. Then her daddy, who knew she wasn't eating, showed up with two pieces of pizza for her, which, of course, she devoured!!!

Thanks again guys!

One thing you might try doing is cutting down just a little on the milk and juice if she is drinking allot. That sometimes can fill them up! But like all the others have said, it this totally normal behavior. My dd is 8 (almost 9) and she definately eats in spurts. I can tell when she is getting ready to grow because she eats like a pig! Then she shoots up and stops eating again! LOL
