Mom's Major Mistake With Bottles!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Mom's Major Mistake With Bottles!
By Tyaustinsma on Friday, October 24, 2003 - 02:23 pm:

I made a huge mistake with my first ds and now he's paying for it and I feel awful for what he has to go through now. His teeth are very bad and they hurt him all the time and it is caused by Baby Bottle syndrome. I just got him off the bottle about 4 weeks ago, he is 27months, I had tried and tried but always gave in after he screamed for an hour, he slept with his bottle and always wanted juice in it at night. I never realized what it was doing to him. now after 3 months of going to the dentist and fighting with my insurance company he has to go in the hospital, so they can do all the work with him asleep. I feel like such a failure as a mom, and I am scared to death to do this. I am afraid of him being put under, and how scared he'll be because we are not going to be able to be with him. The dentist also informed me that she may not be able to save his 2 front teeth. Anyway ladies Thanks for listening and please pray that everything goes well for Tyler on Nov. 4th

Don't be too hard on yourself. There is NO such thing as a perfect mother. We all make mistakes. {{{HUGS}}} Tyler will be in my thoughts and prayers.

BTW, I have a Tyler, too. :) Mine is 7 and in 2nd Grade.

Just consider it a lesson learned.

Christina, ditto Trina and Robin above. One thing about all of this is, they are his baby teeth. Obviously you want to start with good dental hygiene now, but don't keep beating yourself up over it.

My son was stuck inside of me, face up, for hours and the force of my contractions eventually broke through his upper lip and gums. He has scars to this day and he is 20. (the story of *why* this was allowed to happen is a whole other rant!) The injury ruined the formation of his baby teeth. When his upper front teeth came through they were almost rotted looking. It was a nightmare. His permanent teeth came in just fine, and all these years later (with a little help from braces! LOL), he has a beautiful smile.

As for your son going under anesthesia, he should be fine. Good luck November 4! I won't tell you not to worry, BTDT, but try to hold it to a minimum!

Thanks ladies , I really am beating myself up over this, But yes I did learn my lesson and I know exactly what not to do with my other son now.

I know of a couple of kids that have had this happen and had to have caps and crowns put in to "fix" the situation. And I worked at a peds office as a medical assistant for a while and we did quiet a few referals for simluar treatments. We do the best we can do.. That is all we can do... Don't beat himself up and he will be so proud of his new teeth and free of pain. Wishes all goes well....

Don't be too hard on yourself. Everything happens for a reason & now you can share your story like you are doing here & help some other parents who don't know what could happen!!!

Christina,

My son had 10 cavities at 2 years old! Guess what..It was from Breastmilk..So don't beat yourself up. You aren't a bad mom. Some kids have soft teeth that are prone to decay and others have hard teeth that rarely ever get cavities. Needless to say my son underwent anethsesia and they filled all his teeth. It was so quick. He never knew anything. Dad was right there with him the whole time while I cried in the waiting room..LOL :)At 3 we went back to the dentist and they said he needed a cap..I wasn't sure how he would do because I wanted to try it without putting him under and he did great. His dentist couldn't believe how well he sat still and cooperated. I know exactly what you are going through, try not to worry yourself sick like I did.. :)

Nothing to do with teeth but they put my Timmy under at 10 months old to remove an absese(sp?) from his cheek and he did just fine. The nurses loved him he woke up in a great mood and all was well. Mom was more of a mess than he was. He loved the attention. Don't worry just another one of those you live you lean issues.

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for the support. Tyler did so good,He had all the nurses and Dr wrapped around his finger, They asked if I could leave him there.lol. He is very proud of his new teeth, was upsetting because they were unable to save 2 teeth but all is well now and I feel so much better knowing he's not in any pain. As for tyler, he has since been trying to tell his baby brother (8 months old)that bottles are bad for his teeth and he needs to be a big boy like him. lol.
