CAPD (Central Audio Processing )

I'm a mother of a 14 year old girl who was assessed for CAPD 1 1/2 years ago. My daughter had struggled in schools for years, would come home frustrated, crying and hated going to school. The school system was really any help and just said she was to social and couldn't pay attention, I did some investigating on my own and took my daughter to get tested, sure enough her audiologist agreeded that she had CAPD, I went and met with all my daughters teachers handing every one of them her assessment and said that her classroom environment had to be changed...some teacher's cared, other's didn't..those are the one's I had to work with..since I have advocated for my daughter she is a well focused, happy teenager now in high school and doing very well..advocating for her in high school is a bit more of a challenge, but I will never stop advocating for her educational right to learn in school, know matter what accommodation's need to be made...I am a big advocate for parents and student's with this learning difference so if you have any question's feel free to ask.

Thanks, Claire

You did the right thing! I pulled mine out of public school when she stated after second grade, "they are only passing me to pass me!":( Broke my heart. She had a speech/language delayment. The psychologist said it is almost as if one of the wires in her brain is not connected. He said one day everything will just pop for her and it did! She goes to a very small private school (less than 20 students) and works at her own pace. When she doesn't understand something, she is able to stop and comprehend it:)

Hi Claire! Good for you!!! I have 5 girls - 4 with some sort of special needs. I know all about advocating for kids!!!
Where are you in Ontario? I'm north of Toronto. I wonder if we've battled the same board of ed???

Former Advocate here, too! I say former bec I took my ADHD/LD son out of public school after 2nd grade and he's now in 3rd at a private LD school. I don't have to advocate anymore. This school knows what they are doing!! It's an incredible place. The public school was just putting bandaids on as fast as they could rather than really deal with the LDs and then they only had so many bandaids to hand out. It was clear they weren't going to be able to meet his needs. The school told me they weren't going to be able to meet his needs, in fact!

It's only been a couple of months and he's FINALLY learning how to read!

Is this the same as audio processing disorder?

By Clairelouise on Friday, October 24, 2003 - 11:04 am:

Hi Feona

It's basically the same, if you have a child with audio processing disorder a fantastic book to read is "When The Brain Can't Hear" by Terri James Bellis, PH.D.

Hi Marcia

I live in Woodstock, Ontario. It's between London and Kitchener. I deal with the Thames Valley District School board. The thing that amazes me is that half of these teacher's have no clue what this learning difference is and I'm sure that there is a high majority of kids in their classrooms that have CAPD that have never been assessed or that their parents just feel that it's the school and if there is any problems they would tell me..WRONG!!! I speak to as many parents as I can about this to get the word out and I find myself educating some of the teacher's on this matter, which makes me laugh. It was great to hear from someone from Ontario...
