Cheerios question

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Cheerios question
By Tklinreston on Thursday, October 23, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

My ds is 8th months old and has been eating baby food for two months now. Oatmeal...No. 2 Gerber...small pieces of bananas and grapes. He's got two bottom teeth in the front. I'm wondering at what age can I start giving him Cheerios to eat?? Also, unrelated question. He's had a fever of 103 for about 5 days (with no other cold symptoms) and now that the fever is down he's broken out into a rash on his face, stomach and back. Eats and drinks ok although not quite normally. Very cranky at night but the rash doesn't appear to be itchy. I've taken him to the dr twice this week, the latest being this am. They aren't sure what it is..just some virus.... but it sounds to me like a textbook case of roseola.... anyone else gone through this recently??? Anything I need to know?? Thanks.

Well, Cheerios were always the perfect snack because they mushed up so quickly in the little one's mouth... I would think they'd be fine.

Sorry to hear your little guy is sick. It does sound like Roseola but it could be a different virus as well. Hope he's better soon!

As far as the Cheerios, every baby is different. Some do well with them earlier than others. Both my kids started with rice puffs first before trying Cheerios. They are softer and melt quickly in the mouth, thus being less of a choking hazard. I put 2 or 3 on the high chair tray at a time. Great practice for that pincer grasp and fun to watch! LOL!

I started giving my DD cherrios at 7 months but at that time she had 2 top 2 bottom teeth they do "melt" in their mouths fairly well another good snack type food I found was gram cracker sticks they taste just like the regular ones only they are sticks easier to hold for the babies. I have just started giving her things like saltines and other harder type crackers and snacks. Shes now almost 11 months...They grow soooo FAST...Good luck and have fun experimenting with new foods I think it's a ball.

My son started eating baby food at 4 months. By the time he was 7 months old he was eating crackers and cheerios...and table food around 10 or 11 months. I know ever child is different. He has a fairly big appetite, he was never satisfied with just the baby food.

I bet he would be ok with cheerios. Just give him a 1/2 of one to start with and see how he does. Pretty soon he'll be shoveling them in so fast you'll have to stock up! That is a fun age. Like Trina said, it is fun to watch them try to feed themselves. :)

My middle DD didn't like stuff like that. She would put it in her mouth, then quickly spit it out. She would only take soft foods for the longest time. But, my oldest DD loved cheerios, fruit loops, crackers...all of it!

Not sure what to tell you about the fever. Maybe call a different doctor. It's odd that he's been in twice for it and they just don't know what it is. 103 is a pretty big temperature for such a little person. I would get a second opinion, especially if it is going on and on.
Good luck!!

Cheerios would be fine, also our doctor recommended sm. pieces of wheat toast and sometimes they liked to have a small graham cracker for a treat.

As far as the fever-has a urinary tract infection been ruled out. I know it is not common for boys or for a child that young, but my youngest DD had one at that age. Just a thought. Hope you find out what is going on.

I babysit and one of the little ones I watch is 7 months, 2 bottom teeth and Iv been giving her cheerios and crackers for weeks now. We still give her her baby cereal and baby food at meal times but, she loves to still be up in the high chair when the bigger kids are eating so this keeps her content. She's also drinking out of the spill less cups already.
I have a question about the spill less cups? Actaully I think Im just looking for opinions.I think the mothers who carry a spill less cup every where they go is no different then giving them a bottle. Just my opinion.

For me it had nothing to do w/ bottle or no bottle. It was just keeping the liquid from getting everywhere. Babies/toddlers are constantly thristy and you need to tote it around. Sippies are great!

At home, DD was given regular cups but always a sippy when going out. She's 5 now, so we gave up the sippies. But she does carry around those water bottles w/ the pull tops. We still need to keep that stuff from spilling when we are traveling. I use the same thing everywhere I go as well.
