DS Has Bad Stomach Pains. Could It Be the Depakote?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: DS Has Bad Stomach Pains. Could It Be the Depakote?
By Hol on Monday, September 15, 2003 - 02:33 am:

As I told y'all recently, my DS's went to a new psychiatrist who changed/added meds. He put Shawn on Escalith, and took away his Adderall and Remeron. HE seems to be doing much better, with his moods and his behavior.
The dr put Mike on Depakote, in ADDITION to his Zoloft and Risperdal. He started with one pill a day for a week, and we just increased to two. He takes it with dinner, as it is known to upset the stomach.
The past few days, he TOLERATES and keeps food down ok, but he complains of stomach PAIN. Sharp pains in his stomach. He says it hurts to walk, or drive over bumps in the car. It is more on his right side, but not down low where his appendix is. I am keeping him out of school tomorrow, and trying to get the doctor. He says that the heating pad makes it feel better. Mike is usually a very healthy kid, who never complains, so I'm concerned. It's 2:31 AM, and he just came in to tell me that he can't sleep, that he's in too much pain. Depending on what the dr says (I'm going to the pediatrician), he may have to come off the Depakote.
Any experience, or idea what it could be?

No experience, but I hope it's nothing serious. Your DS will be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted, Hol.

Sonja is on depakene, which is, I believe, pretty much the same drug. We give it to her with breakfast and dinner. No signs of pain at all.
I hope he feels better soon!

Is he swallowing the pill or chewing it? Or is he on the sprinkle type?

I was told for my dd to not chew at all as it could upset the stomach. The pill has a special coating to help prevent tummy ache.

Call the pharmacyst and ask them to be sure.

The depakote never gave Matthew any pains in his stomach?? He gets 250mg twice a day and we give it to him right after breakfast and right after dinner (when he has a full belly) I'd definitley get in to see the dr. to find out what is going on and rule out anything serious :( I hope that he is feeling better soon!

No experience with depakote. I would get him into see the Ped. He might have pulled something carring his back pack or something... I would be more inclinde to believe if it was the meds he would be vomitting not having stomach pains.. And once the meds soaked in... Hmmm like I said more inclinde to believe he has something pulled... Take him to the Ped..

This is probably too late, but I would take him to the ER as soon as possible.....my DD had appendicitis for 8 days this winter before they finally figured out what it was...she was in a LOT of pain, but she has a very high pain tolerance from being a gymnast, so it was harder to detect. Also, not all cases are "textbook" - good luck with DS, and please keep us posted.
