DD teething-Already?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: DD teething-Already?
By Boxzgrl on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 - 11:43 am:

I took DD to the Dr. on Sunday because she kept rubbing her ear and I wanted to make sure she didn't have a ear infection. No ear infection thank God! But I was asking the Dr. when the earliest it was that she could begin teething because she was constantly sucking and knawing on her hand and drooling like crazy. The Dr. says "No, she cant teethe right now, shes too young". He NEVER even looked in her mouth. He said they cant teethe until they are like 6 months old. Well I came home and looked on good old Web MD (this site has helped me more than any doctor) and it was naming the symptoms of teething (which she had all of) and one of the symptoms was rubbing at their ears (not pulling, but rubbing). Hmmm, another sign of teething. And boy has she been cranky. I bought some Tylenol and Orajel and she is a lot happier. When she fell asleep I finally had a chance to look in her mouth and what did I see? Two little bottom teeth right under her gum line, not quite poking through but almost there. What is wrong with Dr.s these days?? Do they just not care anymore?? I also noticed on Web MD that children usually teethe around the same time their parents did and I started teething around 3 1/2 months. Not sure when DH did. Anyways, just thought i'd vent at the laziness of the medical field these days........

Also wanted to add, When did your children start teething???

By Tyaustinsma on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 - 11:57 am:

My oldest ds started at 11mo, but my other at 4mo it really all depends on the child for the DR to say it is too early and not to even look is crazy. I totally agree DR's today don't seem to care, it is very hard to find a ped. that really listens to you and takes your concerns seriously, but I have to say that there is still some good dr's out there because I just 2 weeks ago found a new one and he is great. good luck teething is no fun.

My oldest started at 3 months and got his first tooth at 5 months. My youngest didn't really show any signs of teething. I just happen to notice a new tooth when I was feeding him at about 6 months. It all depends on the child.

I didn't know Timmy even had teeth until he bit me. And when I checked him at 6 1/2 months he had 3. My sisters Dr told her that aboutmy niece and she laughed and said OK then smart man put your finger in her month he did and boy did she bite him hard. He said he had never seen a case of teeth as early as 5 months and he was not a really young DR either.

Yep they are all different! My oldest, first tooth 14 months, molars first! Second child 8 months, my baby was 6 months. None of mine really ever had real teething symtoms. My oldest had a heck of weekend though when I noticed the teeth, but after two days that was it.

This Doctor doesn't know what he is talking about. My oldest got her first tooth at 4 1/2 months and one of the baby's I babysit for just got her first and she is 5 1/2 months. My youngest didn't get her's until 7 months.

Thats to bad that the Dr. was so careless as to not even look. I have read that children start at ALL difrent times that no one is the same and that some children, though rare have even been born teething. Dd has been teething since 2 1/2 months she has 4 on top 2 on bottom and the rest are just below with 2 trying to poke through. She is almost 9 months, hopefully the poor baby is almost done these last few have been terrible for her. Melissa I found that cold wet wash cloths worked very well when Dd was so young because it was easy for her to hold onto. She still does this. Good luck to you and Kaitlyn

Older dd was born August 4, 1989. New Year's Day of 1990, I'm trying to sleep after working nights on New Year's Eve. She is fussing and crying alllll day! It was very hard to sleep. Poor thing just couldn't settle down. Finally, in the evening, we decide maybe it's teeth and give her some Tylenol. She was much happier. 10 days later, she had her bottom teeth. She was 5 months old.

It all depends on the child. My neice just got her bottom two teeth a month ago. She was trying to get them for three months. You could see them but they wouldn't break through.

DS started teething at 5 1/2 months and got one right after the other there was no brake in between. DD started teething about 2 months and didn't get her first until 3 1/2 months. The only thing that saved us with DS and I used the same with DD is the teething tablets that you can get at Wal-Mart. They are tiny little white tablets that disolve on the babies tongue or you can disolve them in a teaspoon of water. They are wonderfull and work right away.

I can't really remember when my kids were teething. With Drake we were at the mall. I was sitting there eating and I had a birds eye view of his mouth. I noticed something in there and I thought that he had gotten into something. Nope! When I looked closer I saw that it was a little tooth. Never even bothered him one bit. I think he was 6-8 months. Gracie is a blank. It is totally normal for your dd to start teething now. I have read that some kids are even born with teeth. Isn't theat odd? Every kid is different. I think that parents know more than doctors. I don't know how many times I have gone to the doc because I thought one had an ear infection or something just to have them say they are fine. Then I end up back there two days later with a really sick child and sure enough! Mommy knows best!
