Help for Diaper Rash

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Help for Diaper Rash
By Angellew on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 10:45 am:

Last Friday, as I was getting my DD ready for her bath, I took off her diaper and found a quit messy poop that had no smell at all!!! When I started to clean her, I noticed diaper rash. I asked my DH when she had had her diaper changed last, and he said it had only been one a couple of hours (but with no smell to it, the poop could have been in there the whole 2 hours). The rash seems to be concentrated more "up front" than it is on her bum, but the poopy was really smushed in there!!! Since then, we have been caking the Desenex on her, but it has only helped a little. She has never really had a diaper rash like this before. Every other time, one night with the Desenex and it was gone!

Are there any remedies I should try or should I go ahead and call the doctor? (Like I said, it's worrying me because it is really concentrated in the front... I hate to be graphic, but, all around her "lips" and private area but not her bum cheeks!!!)

TIA

I would call the doctor. When Jessica and Chad both would get a real bad diaper rash, I would call because of infections. I forget the name of the medicine but it's something with silver in it. I also use cloth wipes or wash clothes, so I wouldn't make it worse. Poor thing, I really hope she gets better soon.

If it's not blistering, try Caldesene medicated powder. If she has a messy diaper again, bathe her or use a wet washcloth (no baby wipes) and let her run around naked for a while before using any ointment or powder.

Hope it goes away fast!

If Desinex or other creams aren't doing the trick she may have a yeast infection. My daughter got a really bad rash once that didn't go away and the doctor diagnosed a yeast infection. I had no idea babies could get them but they can and it's no big deal. I forget what she had to use but it cleared up in no time. So I would take her to the doctor's if she doesn't start to improve soon. Good luck!

Okay, advice from my doc, my daughter was often the same way, tended to get rashy on her girl parts and not her bum. At first we treated it like yeast, it didn't help. finally he said, go to the pet supply store and get something called "corona" it is a yellow tube with a reddish/orange lid. This stuff is amazing. It has lanolin and an anespetic in it, stings a touch, but one application before bed and they wake up all better! Worth it's weight in gold!

I just got off the phone with the doctor and they are suggesting a yeast infection... so, they are calling in a prescription for the cream, and we'll see how that works. But, I am definitely writing the Corona down! That sounds like it would come in handy in all kinds of situations!

Thank you sooooo much Ladies!

I'm a little late with this but I had the same experience with my son, twice. Messy diaper, no smell and a horendous rash. He just screamed when we tried to clean it and would not sit in the bath (he would try but screamed as soon as the water hit his little bottom). A few friends recommended lotrimin (as the diaper rash ointment did nothing). His rash was all over (even his little scrotum!) and on his bottom looked almost like welts. Anyway we put it on and overnight the rash diappeared! A agree with Sunny, until the rash clears up don't use wipes. We used big cotton balls and water.

Lotrimin AF... Anti Fungal.. A beet red bottom is not a diaper rash it is a yeast type infection. The Anti Fungal kills of the yeast... Used it on my kids. And when I worked at a Ped's we recomended it to our patients... It is a ointment for athletes foot. You will find it in the foot care products at any store...

Over night and it is all gone.. No lie...
