What age for the movies?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: What age for the movies?
By Nicosmom on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 01:14 am:

I was thinking of taking my ds to the movies..since it has been 100 degrees plus all this week. He is only 2 and I'm not sure how he will react. He loves the Toy Story movies and I was thinking of taking him to Finding Nemo, since it has the same realistic look..I think that's what he likes about those movies. Is two a good age, or too young yet?

I took my son to his first movie when he was about 3 i think. It really wasnt a good movie to take him to and he really wasnt interested. My daughter was 5 when she saw her first one and she loved it!

I took my kids to see finding Nemo and we all loved it. So many people told me the movie wasnt good and it wasnt good for kids either, but I had to disagree, it was great!

Not sure what age is the best to start with movies, I guess its all up to you if you think your child is ready for the long sit or not.

Ds wouldn't sit in the movies at two. He would sit for a Imax movie though. He does sit for a movie at three and a half...

Ask if you can have your money back if ds won't sit. I think alot of theater offer that if you ask.

I think it depends on the kid. My ds was 2 and he loved it and for the most part did very well. He will be five in August. My dd who is 2 is awful at the movies! It doesn't hold her attention. She can be pacified with popcorn ect... for a little while but that doesn't always work. I do find she does better when the movie has been out for a couple of weeks and its not crowded. She can walk around the aisle a little and does not have to be completely quiet. But after the last time when dh had to take her out shortly after Nemo started he said "never again!" Its a little hard because ds loves to go and he is at that age that asks when he sees it advertised on tv.

If you think your little guy would like it I would try him. But just be prepared to leave. BTW my ds loves Toy Story also. He has had a Woody doll since he was 2 and it is definately still his favorite thing!

We took the 13yo daughter to her first movie when she was 2 years and 4 months. The movie was Beauty and the Beast. The only one who couldn't sit through the movie was me, since I was 6 months pregnant with dd#2. During the "Be Our Guest" scene, I had to go to the bathroom! LOL!

Thanks a lot ladies, this really helped. I think I will try taking him. This movie has been out for a while and I'm hoping there won't be a huge crowd of people. The thing I am now worried about is the volume and the darkness, but I'll give it a try. I'll let you all know how it goes!

We took Chad and Jessica to the movies for the first time. We saw the Rugrats movie and did the matanee(sp). The best part was that because Chad is 2 he got in FREE!! He sat there and watched the movie, but at the beginning when they show the previews he wanted to go bye bye.

My DD saw her first movie in March. She was almost 5.

The reason for this was I don't approve of the manner the characters act/talk. She was 4 when I allowed her to watch the Disney videos that we own. And even now there are a few that she has not seen (ie Lion King and Little Mermaid).

Her first movie was Piglets Big Movie. What a perfect first theater movie! It was so cute for little ones. Absolutely nothing was said that had a bad meaning or counter "adult" meaning. Everyone spoke nicely and with respect.

We saw Nemo last weekend. DD enjoyed the movie. I didn't have a problem with the characters or what they said.

I do watch a movie with DD and we do discuss the things they say that are not polite (such as "...oh, great, I'll be watching your butt..." in Homeward Bound) She now picks out the things they say and lets me know if they are not nice or disrespectful. I feel she is old enough to decide right from wrong and if she copies their expressions, she knows if she has made a bad choice. Something she would not have understood at age 2.

This is just my personal feelings. I know plenty of other moms that are not as strict.

I would say go for it :) Take him and see how he likes it! We've been taking our DK's to the movies since age 1. They are now ages 5,3 and 1. They all know how to sit quietly through the movie and they know how to behave. I think it's a good idea :)

Finding Nemo is a really cute movie. But, it is a little on the long side. I thought it was really entertaining and my DK's really liked it. But, for a first movie, it may run a bit long! Have fun!
BTW...you can check out the momsview reviews on Finding Nemo on the book/movie board.

We didn't get there today, perhaps Monday morning. Thanks!
