St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Reportedly, St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 A.D. By the end of the 7th century Patrick had become celebrated and there are many legends surrounding St Patrick. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by the Irish as well as the Irish at heart with parades, parties, wearing of green, drinking beer, music and songs, Irish food and drink. Because many Americans celebrate their Irish lineage on St. Patrick's Day, the month of March was chosen as Irish American Heritage Month and proclaimed as such in 1995 by Congress (Public Law 103-379). Retailers hold sales and have special offers on items typically associated with the day.
