Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras are the preferred tool for professional and advanced amateurs wanting complete control of their photography.
An SLR provides a real-time view through-the-lens used to take the photograph allowing more exact framing and preview of the focusing of the final picture.
Most SLR's use a pop-up mirror to reflect light entering the lens into a viewfinder. When shopping for an SLR, these are some specifications to consider:
Low Light capability of the sensor: Assuming the SLR will be used for nightime or high speed action photography, examine the image quality at high ISO (ASA)
settings. Low quality SLRs will have excessive chroma noise at these settings.
Maximum burst rate: When used for sports photography, a high burst rate (>5 frames per second) will allow the SLR to capture great action shots.
Lens mount: The capability of an SLR is defined by the lenses it can use. Stick to a mainstream manufacturer like Canon or Nikon for the greatest
availability of SLR lenses. Lenses in general ARE NOT swapable between manufacturers. Third party lens manufacturers like Sigma and Tokina provide
inexpensive alternatives for SLR lenses.
Battery Life: For all day shoots the life of the internal battery can be critical. Always purchase a spare battery and carry it with you.
Modern SLRS all use rechargeable Lion batteries that take at least an hour to charge.
