Major "wet" (canned) pet food recall - sold at Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger & other stores

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2007: Major "wet" (canned) pet food recall - sold at Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger & other stores
By Ginny~moderator on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 04:57 pm:

From ABC News:

A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.
...
An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall.
...
The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site http://www.menufoods.com/recall early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (800) 551-7392.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

:( Thanks for posting this, Ginny. We don't shop at any of the stores listed, but I'll check the list anyway.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 06:55 pm:

We don't buy our dog food at Walmart anyway.

By Tripletmom on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 07:36 pm:

That's sad :( We shop at Pet Value.Due to allergies we just feed them dry food only now.

By Cocoabutter on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 08:18 pm:

I was told by my vet to only buy brand name dog food. I guess that's a good thing. :)

By Hol on Friday, March 16, 2007 - 11:04 pm:

Thanks, Ginny. I had heard this briefly on the local evening news tonight. We feed only brand name food, too, but I will want to see the list, since they produce SOME brand names, too. If you go to www.menufoods.com, it said that more information will be posted after 6:00AM on March 17, 2007. At this point, inspectors don't know what it is that has caused the deaths.

Dog Food List

I just got this link, in an email.

By Hol on Saturday, March 17, 2007 - 11:19 pm:

That is very sad and scary. We give the dogs Pedigree and the cats Friskies.

I just switched to Iams cat food for Cocoa & wouldn't you know it, we have given her 15 of the 24 pack & it has been recalled.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, March 18, 2007 - 08:50 pm:

Oh bummmer!

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, March 19, 2007 - 11:09 am:

Emily, if the food you had for Cocoa was contaminated, you'd have no doubt. Scott has been following this and the onset is very, very quick and almost always very quickly fatal. So while I would (as I'm sure you did) get rid of the 9 cans left, from what Scott is telling me you are home free. He also had to do some checking, because he bought a case of Sophisticat for his cat several weeks ago. Fortunately, none of it is on the list.

More info here at the link below. Upon further investigation, I found our cat food listed. :( I need to check the can numbers, etc.

OK< I am tired today and my brain is slow. ha I didnt see Purina Dog Chow nor did I see Science Diet puppy food on that list Dawn posted... Is that correct or was I suppose to click on something else?

By Tarable on Monday, March 19, 2007 - 06:01 pm:

I believe that they added more brands to the list after the first list was posted, but I am not positive on that. I just realized that my cat's food is on the list i guess i need to check the packages for the numbers.

By Cocoabutter on Monday, March 19, 2007 - 10:47 pm:

Yes, I am sure they have added some brands to the list. I looked at it the first time, and I didn't see the Science Diet. I give my cat Science Diet, but not the cuts in gravy.

It is so sad, on the news here, to see pet owners sad about the senseless loss of their pet...

I heard tonight that they changed the supplier that they buy wheat gluten from, which is an ingredient. I guess the new stuff was contaminated with toxic mold spores. Very tragic!
