Well, my ds has strep throat, again. I think this is the second or third time he has had it this school year.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows when a doctor would suggest getting the tonsils out. I thought it was after so many times of having strep. I'm pretty sure he isn't close to whatever number that is, but I was just curious.

Luckily he is doing fine. Usually when he as it he is throwing up and has a high fever. Right now its more like he has a cold. I"m so glad I took him to the Dr. today though. I just wanted to make sure he didn't have strep before we went on a 4 hour car ride to visit my sister for the weekend. At least now he will have been on the antibiotics for 24 hours before we go.

Funny, I asked this question at my son's doctor office last week.

I had actually suspected that it was strep, so when we went in, we just saw the nurse who performed the test. Since it came out positive for strep, we didn't really need to see a doctor at that point.

She said that they actually try not to take tonsils out much anymore. They are good for the immune system. But if the strep is a recurrent problem, it could be considered after talking with the doctor about it.

My doctor said the same thing.....they really don't like to take out tonsils anymore, if they don't have to. In the spring of his 1st year of preschool, ds got strep 4 or 5 times. Fortunately, once school let out, he didn't get it again, and hasn't had it again until last week(he is now almost 7). Even with getting it that many times, they still didn't even want to talk about it yet.

I had strep 4 times in 8 months, a long time ago. I even saw the ENT to see if I should have my tonsils out. DH wanted to wait a few months for health insurance reasons. So, we waited. We ended up never getting it scheduled. Then I stopped getting strep so often and can't even remember the last time I had strep throat. I still have my tonsils. It was just a fluky year. Even though I work in a clinic and we have strep throat come through often, I haven't gotten it!
