Question for those who talk while driving...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: Question for those who talk while driving...
By Mrsheidi on Monday, January 29, 2007 - 09:06 pm:

I just rode in a car with a lady in my mom's club with the kids in the back and all I can say is WHOAH.

It makes me sssoooooo nervous when people drive and LOOK at me while their talking! Why is there a need for eye contact when you are DRIVING? I'm never riding in the car with her again...ever.

Do you try to make eye contact while talking in the car, while driving?

Heidi...I can almost SEE the anxiousness in your voice...er...typing !!! You must have had a real experience,Tee Hee ! Just picking at'cha !! But, I actually wrestle with this dilemah ( so much so,that I can't even spell it right!) I feel like I am being rude if I don't look at my passenger occasionally, but I feel like maybe I shouldn't. I especially feel awkward if there is a passenger in the back seat and I am in the frount, but not driving.Do you turn around to look at them when you speak to them? Or ,do you keep looking ahead? I feel like I am talking to the windsheild!!

I have a friend who is deaf and read lips, boy is it hard riding in a car with her! She wants to talk, but she can't hear if I am not looking at her!

Of course her driving is much much worse!

I'm ALWAYS aware of the cars and people around me.I do not give eye contact but I don't feel rude I think the person I'm talking to would appreciate me watching the road. When traffic gets heavy I need to concentrate.I've had to tell Katie a few times that I would continue our conversation when I could give her my undivided attention and unfortunaltey thats not when I'm driving.LOL If traffic is flowing nicley and I'm aware of whats around me I will give eye contact through the rearview mirror but never turn around.I also cannot understand the need to talk on the phone while driving it should be against the law everywhere.I would love to be the phone police I would enjoy the job and I'm sure I could catch ALOT of people.LOL People take driving for granted and it only takes a split second for our lives to totally change because of carelessness.

I can hardly keep a conversation going while I am driving nevermind actually make eye contact! My hubby can, though, and I totally trust his driving. Go figure.

I'm with Lisa. I can chat a bit when driving, but not about anything serious. And I have been known to say, when approaching a trick bit of driving (high speeds & lots of traffic, nasty intersection, etc.) to say - don't talk to me until I get through this.

I am actually horrified right along with you. I would say something to her if the opportunity arises. She is putting her kids and others in danger. You were probably sitting there thinking, "ok, so this is it, I'm not going to make this out alive. " I have BTDT. I stopped carpooling with a friend because of her driving. When it was her turn to drive, I would wake up with anxiety. There is just no call for that nonsense.

I was riding in a car with someone and the windshield was fogging up and she was all busy talking and stuff. I finally turned on the defroster and it wasn't my car! I've only ever been in a car with her, once. I think I would be scared to ride with her again
