Blizzard!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2006: Blizzard!
By Cat on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 08:36 am:

That's what they're calling it anyway. We're under a blizzard warning (since last night) until 6pm today. We've only gotten about four inches so far, but that's since about 4am (it's 6:30 now) but the winds are blowing pretty good and it'll drift. They're saying we're going to get 6-10 inches and of course it'll be worse out where I am as opposed to in the city because of the winds and not having taller buildings to block it. We had a blizzard about three or four years ago and they shut down both major road to us. It was interesting. People were freaking out and the local Safeway (about 2 miles from me) ran out of about everything because the trucks couldn't get to it. I'm not concerned. We won't starve! lol Now of course, tomorrow it's supposed to be in the 50's and we'll be in the 60's by this weekend. Gotta love Colorado weather! I just wonder if any of my daycare kiddos will show up. I know the baby won't be here because his mom is a teacher in the next district over, but all the schools are closed today. They even closed three of the four military bases (non-essential personnel). Both parents of the two brothers I have work at bases that are closed, but they're both contractors and don't get snow days. They have to take leave/personel time. (dh does, too--he works on one of the bases) I'd be surprised if they show up though. That leaves one little guy who's dad works on the only base that is open (2 hour delay). I don't know if he'll try and make it or not. I'm hoping he'll just leave the little boy home with his aunt (mom's in Italy right now {remote--15-18 months} and aunt is staying with them to help out). My boys are going to be thrilled to have a snow day. I'm actually hoping it'll stay until tomorrow so we'll have a four day weekend!

So any of you southerners that really want to see snow, come on up! lol I'll try and get some pictures when it gets light out. I've heard on the news visibility is about 150 yards--to the end of your headlights. As long as I don't have to go out in it, I love it! :)

By Cat on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 08:56 am:

Well, they've closed the last military base! I may get a day off! :)

By Dana on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:14 am:

By Tonya on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:21 am:

The sun is shining here and the high today is actually suppose to hit 52. I can hope. And then tomorrow thru Monday rain rain rain rain and cold.

Good luck enjoy your snow day and have fun with the boys!! Be safe if you have to drive.

By Tarable on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:31 am:

Wow.. isn't it early for snow? It is going to be almost 80 here today... I like it warmer but having a free day off would be kinda nice right about now.

By Karen~admin on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:36 am:

I'm on my way!

By Bemerry84 on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:41 am:

I'm glad it's you with snow and not me. I am so not ready for it. Have a fun day!!!!!!

By Tink on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:48 am:

I'm with Tara. 79 degrees forecasted here for today and I wouldn't trade you for the world. Curl up by a window with a good book and watch the snow come down for me, Cat! Better you than me.:)

Be safe. {{{Cat}}}

By Cat on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 09:53 am:

No, it's not too early for snow! We've gotten snow 2 or 3 times already this year. It never stays more than a few days, though and usually it's gone the next day unless we get at least 6-8 inches.

The dad of the one little boy called and said he'd like to bring him for a few hours because they don't have power and the little boy is miserable. Whatever. I think he's stupid for trying to get out in this. The news keeps saying if you don't have to go anywhere, DON'T! All the other parents have called and said enjoy your day!

You're welcome anytime, Karen. I knew you'd want to come. :) Dh has got the fireplace going and I've got lots of hot chocolate, tea and hot cider. We have coffee, but we don't drink it so what's in there is probably 3 or 4 years old and needs to be thrown out! lol Anyone else??? :)

By Cat on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 10:14 am:

We have 5-6 inches now and the little guy that's supposed to be coming still isn't here. His dad called an hour ago and they're only about 8 miles from me. I hope they're okay. :( The news just had a reporter about 2 miles from me and she said visibility is only about 20-30 feet and most cars are just pulling off to the side of the road and sitting with their hazards on.

By Luvn29 on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 10:20 am:

Wow! Hopefully the dad decided it would be best to just turn around and go home. Even if he gets there, what about it getting worse during the time he is there? Sounds like HE is the one wanting a day off! I'd never take a chance on my children getting stranded somewhere without me!

By Tayjar on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 10:33 am:

I love snow! My DD wants to live where there is lots of snow. Winter is her favorite month. Enjoy it for us. We are very envious of you. Oh, and I agree about the dad bringing his child to you. I'd rather brave the cold inside my home than the dangers on the road.

By Cat on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 11:28 am:

They finally did make it. They both stayed for about an hour, had some toast and then dad decided he'd better just take him home because he didn't want to not be able to get back to pick him up. He said our neighborhood streets were the worst. We will end up with a heafty drift at the end of our street before the day is over. So they both just left and he does have power at his house now. He did say he almost just stayed home to begin with, but the power came on just long enough for their pellet stove to light and then went off, letting the pellet stove go out (electric--duh!) and fill the house with smoke. He was hoping their time out of the house was enough to let the house air out. This is a very interesting family! lol Now I just hope they make it home alright.

By Kate on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 12:41 pm:

No thank you, Cat. I have absolutely NO desire to come and visit you right now. Ask again in July. :)

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 01:15 pm:

Wow! We've had a few snow flurries, but nothing more. Madison, about 2-1/2 hours west, had 2.3 inches recently. It would be weird for us to have that much snow, this soon! Enjoy your day off.

By Emily7 on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 05:06 pm:

Cat I hope you keep that there! We are supposed to be getting snow on Wed, the pictures on 9 news don't look so fun.
Tara our first snow was Sept 16th this year & we have had it 4 times this month so far.

By Nicki on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 05:42 pm:

Hope you're enjoying your day off! Lara and I would love to visit. I lived in snow country for ten years, but Lara is too young to remember her one snowy winter before we relocated. She wants to build a snowman. :-)
Take care and stay warm.

By Bellajoe on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 07:07 pm:

Oh Cat, i'm not looking forward to those days.

I really don't mind the snow, as long as I don't have to drive on snowy roads.

It is pretty to look at from the warmth of my home though!

By Cocoabutter on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 07:11 pm:

Cat, can you keep the snow there until after the World Series is over? :)

JK!

It looks like that storm is headed for St. Louis Friday.

I hope you are able to keep your power and keep warm!

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 10:01 pm:

*sniff* I miss real snow and Colorado! We are hoping, once Scott returns next April, that we can move back. I miss it BADLY! Enjoy the current hibernation and the sledding afterwards! I'm UBER envious, actually!

By Wandilu on Thursday, October 26, 2006 - 10:43 pm:

I would LOVE to come for a visit !! Each year I BEG for everyone to send me some snow...Tn doesn't get a whole lot of the white stuff. Please post some pics,I'd love to see them.I've always wanted to visit Colorado;it looks so beautiful in books.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 02:33 pm:

I don't have to beg for snow. I know WI will get it eventually! LOL!

By Emily7 on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 05:04 pm:

Cat do you have power? I know that some places were expected to be without power overnight & got up to 20+ inches of snow! According to 9 news Conifer got 25 inches of snow!

Tayjar, I'm LOL about winter being her favourite MONTH!! How about if she had it for 3 seasons like some of us do? :)

By Cat on Friday, October 27, 2006 - 09:27 pm:

We never lost power. There were some downed lines a little east and north of us, though. We ended up getting between 15-20 inches, although you wouldn't know it in some places because the wind blew it all over! We had some spots in our yard that were barely covered and others that had 4-5 foot drifts. School was canceled again today (yeah!) and most of the bases and other businesses had delays. Dh did go to work today, but drove my car (Durango--he has an Eclipse and never would have made it). He said there were between 15-20 cars abandoned on Hwy 24 in the 8 miles between here and where he works. People should have just stayed home! I tried to get some pictures today but ended up with a lot of glare on them so it's hard to make out the snow. It was in the 50's today so most (where there weren't drifts) is already melted. It's supposed to be in the 60's the next two day. Like I said, gotta love Colorado weather!

Heidi, if you miss it too much before Scott comes back you can always come hang out with me! :) Bring Karen, Tayjar (and her dd!), Nikki and Wandilu with you! We'll have a big snow party and then cook out on the grill the next day! rofl

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, October 28, 2006 - 08:42 pm:

LOL, Cat! That sounds just about right!!! And, in the summer, you can predict the rain to hit sometime between 3-5pm and last about a half hour. :)
