Big things going on

Across the street from our house the President and his family were gathered this morning.

We are having a Nor'easter blowing here, and the weather is miserable. I watched the ceremony from our third floor windows...no need to go out there to get soaked. President George W. Bush and Laura Bush were there along with Doro Bush Koch, his sister, who was the ship's sponsor, Former President George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush, JEB Bush, Rumsfeld, and a ton of military, State and Federal hot shots.

On Saturday, October 7, 2006, Northrop Grumman Newport News is christening the nation’s 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, George H. W. Bush (CVN 77). The ship’s namesake and 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, is attending the ceremony along with his wife Barbara and their daughter, Doro Bush Koch, Mrs. Koch also serves as the ship’s sponsor and will do the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship’s bow during the ceremony.

Very cool, Bea!! Wasn't the motorcade awesome? He was here two years in a row and we saw the motorcade go right by and Air Force One fly overhead. What, exactly, is across the street from your house?? A harbor?

Also, did secret service come and check you out or anything? Were any of the neighbors put thru any kind of check? Are we seeing your pics thru a zoom lens, I assume? Awesome pics! And did you stand there with binoculars?

My SIL is a bigwig in the administration of Northrup Grumman and she flies all over in the corporate jet. She goes to a lot of the christenings so she may have been there. I'll have to ask. Cool pics!

I live across the street from the dry dock where they built the carrier. We watched them build it. I didn't take those pictures. They were by professional photographers at the ceremony. The ship's stern faces my house, and the guests sat below the bow. In the second picture you can see the huge crane in the right background that says RUMMAND. That is almost above my house when it is pulled back like that.
