Math software for kids

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: Math software for kids
By Colette on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 - 02:09 pm:

My youngest is struggling a bit with math. It's more a speed thing than anything else - she knows how to get the answers but she is slower than others getting them and it is effecting her grades and her self esteem. I am looking for something that would be a bit more fun than boring old flash cards so I am looking at software, but there are tons of it for her age - she is 10 in 4th grade. Does anyone have a particular math game that they really like?

multiplication and division bingo. My school kids love it. Try some multiplication timed test. That will help with her speed.

My DDs 3rd grade math teacher suggested this sight to help with timed tests and just memorizing facts you might try it. I have never done a link but here goes my first try....

Math Magician

Both of my kids love it and my youngest in 4th grade still plays with it for multiplication and division.

Math Workshop was great for us. You have to configure your computer to work with it, since it isn't an XP program, but even I had fun playing with it.

Math Workshop Review

Can still get it from Amazon
Math Workshop on Amazon as kind of an Ebay-like thing.

I'm not really up on anything more current, since my kids have long grown out of it!

We play mulitplication war with cards. I found with my 10 year old that he just isn't translating the computer games into real life. So all you do is like traditional war with cards, is flip 2 at a time, multiply them and winner takes all. jacks are 11, queens are 12 and we play kings are zeros. We all love it, I also make him practice when he flips cards, 3 times 5 is 15, etc.

I may have some suggestions, but first, what in particular is she having trouble with...the concepts or the math facts (like quick multiplication and division)?

I just reread your post. Sounds like speed of math fact recall issues. I work with kids with reading problems, which often translates into math problems. These picture cards are GREAT!!!

City Creek cards

wow!!! thanks for all the ideas!

it's just her speed on the facts - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Here is a link listing SEVERAL links w/ various skills. You will see some of the links work w/ timed skills. My DD loved this site.

HUGS Collette. I just went thru all of this the last few weeks w/ DD. She was in 3rd grade and only had one page of homework per night in a homework packet. I love those. You get to pick and choose what and how many pages you want to get done and when. But anyway, I dreaded 2pm, because we would hit the books and computer working ever so hard to make sense of things. She was feeling so lost. She actuall paid attention during homework, with MOM as the teacher for 2 weeks at 4-5 hours a night AFTER a full day at school.

This week is her first week back in 2nd grade and she is thrilled! I am so glad those hard tearful nights are over. Not that your DD needs to move back a grade...just that I understand completely how you feel watching her struggle.

I found a few other sites that we used as well, but that one worked best for practicing. Let me know if you need other links.
