How to know if this is infected or not?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2006: How to know if this is infected or not?

My 6yo had a wart frozen off his leg last Thursday. There is a scab where the wart was. And around that is a red circle and it looks almost swollen? It looks strange. Have you had a wart frozen off? IF so, did it heal with a red circle around it and look swollen?

Thanks!

Conni, I had several warts frozen off about ten years ago and it was the ugliest healing period I've ever seen! They were on my hand and I was a cheerleader at the time. I distinctly remember missing two weeks of games because I didn't want anyone to see how red and swollen the area was. I really think it's probably normal but if you really want to set your mind at ease, why don't you give your Dr's office a call? :)

I also have had this done. Yes, it is very ugly healing. I had one on the corner of my lip, and all the pictures of me during that time, my hand is over that side of my face. It hurt too.

Freezing off a wart is kind of like getting a burn. I don't think burns heal all that pretty.

If you think it's too red, though, call the doctor, because maybe it is getting infected.

Well, the actual wart area is a dark red scab it looks fairly normal. But there is now a large ring around the wart the size of a silver dollar probably. So there is a red circle, then it gets kind of white or normal flesh color but with streaks of red, then the wart is in the center.

A lady at the school this morning asked if he had been bitten by a spider? lol

I feel so sorry for him! I think he needs glasses, speech therapy, and now his leg may fall off. Not to mentione he has bruises all up and down his legs from bike wrecks, etc... lol argh I am going to start wrapping him in bubble wrap.

Liquid nitrogen is like 360 degrees below zero so yes, it is going to get worse before it gets better. If you are really worried about it being infected, definitely call the Dr., but in the mean time, keep neosporin on it. Hope it gets better soon. :)

Was it a really big wart? If it was a really big wart then I would definitely say this was normal but i'm not a Dr. LOL. There is a recent a post about skin tags which are frozen off the same way, but they are smaller. I will bump it up for you. i don't know if it will help or not but it might. It's the one that says Kind of TMI.
