We got a new bed!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2006: We got a new bed!
By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 03:17 pm:

We just bought a Tempur-pedic bed!!! We've been *thinking* about buying one for several years. Our mattress was getting soft, and with both of us having back issues, it was really starting to become uncomfortable. It has always amazed me how short the life of a mattress is! It was a good quality, firm mattress when new 11 years ago, but now it's shot.

So, due to a little extra unexpected cash flow, we decided to invest in the Tempur-pedic. We got the Euro bed, because it was the high density mattress, and the firmest. Plus it came with the heavy duty frame, the platform (box springs) and 2 king size Swedish pillows. I can't believe how much more comfortable it is!!!!

I had concerns because a couple of people have mentioned they heard the mattresses' support did not hold up. But it has a 20 year guarantee, as opposed to 10 years on a regular mattress. And thinking about it, I paid about half of what this cost, ten years ago for a regular mattress set, so I guess the price wasn't *that* bad. At any rate, it was worth it for the comfort.

Just had to share! How pathetic is it when you get so excited over a new mattress??

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 03:25 pm:

Congrats!! My neighbor bought one, and loves it. The only complaint was it smelled like crayons for a while. LOL!!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 04:01 pm:

Ya know, it *did* have a funny smell - now that you mention it, it DOES smell like crayons! It was delivered on Saturday; this morning I didn't notice the smell. Of course, that could be because I have a cold.......LOL

Brookstone had one in the store in Lakeside Mall and we would lie on it every time we sent shopping, but a bedding company nearby had like 6 different models, and we like the Euro bed the best.

How long has your neighbor had theirs???

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 06:59 pm:

Karen, let me know, periodically how it is holding up. My DH broke his back years ago and we were thinking about a Tempur-pedic. Someone told me the mattress firms up real hard when the air conditioner is on. Are you running your air conditioner yet? LOL about the crayon smell!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 07:16 pm:

Are we running the A/C YET?? I have to LOL! We run the A/C here 50 weeks out of the year. So I don't know that I'll ever notice what it's like withOUT the A/C. We WANTED a very firm mattress. When you first sit/lie on this one it feels hard, then you realize it has molded to your body. I am loving it! I've had 2 back surgeries, and have several herniated disks and other stuff, and DH has a congenital back thing, so a good mattress is VERY high on our list of priorities. The only thing I have noticed about the mattress that was a bit surprising, was that it seems to hold heat in, and since we have the pillows as well, *I* feel it. DH is always cold so he's loving that. LOL If you get the mattress, you really should get the pillows too. They are wonderful!

Sounds like you have a nice comfy bed now! We got a Simmons Beautyrest, the last time we got a new mattress. So far it's been very comfortable. Our last mattress was about 10 years old, when we replaced it.

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:01 pm:

Congrats! We have a Simmons Beautyrest. I remember being excited when we bought ours too. It's amazing how much a good night of sleep affects your whole day though. One investment very well worth every penny.

By Tripletmom on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:16 pm:

Congrats on the new bed!!!! I desperatley need a new mattress.I'd love to get some king size pillows too.

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:24 pm:

Karen, she bought it about 6 months ago, while her DH was deployed. I'm not sure what he thinks of it, but I know she has just loved it, she said the first night she laid down to talk on the phone, and had to hang up because she couldn't resist falling asleep!!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:32 pm:

Crystal, if you can remember, would you mind asking her if she has noticed any changes in the mattress? That's my only *real* concern.

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:39 pm:

Karen, LOL! I forgot that you live wayyyy down south! :)

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:43 pm:

If the mattress holds in the heat then that kills it for me. I do not handle heat very well, especially when I'm sleeping. I'm glad you mentioned it.

By Kateg on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:04 pm:

We've had our Tempurpedic for about 3 1/2 years now - absolutely love it & miss it dreadfully when we are travelling.

Enjoy!

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:17 pm:

Will do, Karen!

By Hol on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 11:32 pm:

I bought a memory foam TOPPER for our regular Serta mattress. Even IT is WONDERFUL! No, it doesn't hold in heat. I worried about that, too, because I have to be cool when I sleep.
I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, and before we got the topper, I could never get comfortable. Now I barely move all night.
Recently bought one for youngest DS, too. He loves it. The toppers cost about $125.00 for a full size bed, and they are about 3 inches thick.

By Colette on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 06:17 am:

Sounds great Karen!

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 07:34 am:

Sandy, it just holds in enough heat where *I* can tell the difference in temperature. I have a very narrow *comfort zone* when it comes to temps! I just turn the A/C one degree lower. LOL It is by far the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on.

By Eve on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 06:13 pm:

Whooo, Karen! I tried one out a few weeks ago while looking at LR furniture. It was really strange. I think I would like it! It was firm, but I didn't feel any pressure on anything. I hope you enjoy it! How does your back feel?

By Conni on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 06:22 pm:

Well, I am sold from this post. I really must go try one out! LOL We have been saying we need a King size bed for a few yrs now but I never thought about what *type* of mattress we would get!! Sounds like an excuse to start shopping!

By Tink on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 07:32 pm:

DH and I just tried one out today while we were furniture window shopping. I couldn't believe how different it felt the minute we laid down. Sooo comfortable and supportive. Every inch of my body felt supported and cushioned. I REALLY want one now but, with a king-sized bed and a fairly new mattress, I don't think it's in the budget yet. Just color me green with envy!:)

By Sandysmom on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 10:38 pm:

Ok, I know you will probably laugh at this question, but what if something spills on it, or your kid pees the bed on it. It looks like a big sponge.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 07:41 am:

Sandy, I bought a really good quality mattress protector at Linens 'n Things for it. We don't have young children anymore - heck, my granddaughter is 5 already, so that's not a worry for us. However, even with babies, young kids, I'd think the mattress protector would work. The Euro bed we got has a suede like covering on it, so it's not like the mattress is exposed anyway. But I didn't want *that* damaged, so I bought the mattress protector anyway.

OH - and what you see in the TV ads is true! ROFL We put a glass on the bed and I jumped up and down just to test that theory. And then tried it with DH lying on the bed, and the glass a foot away from him. LOVE this mattress!!!

Eve, my back AND my hips hurt less after a week of sleeping on this mattress.

By Sandysmom on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 11:35 am:

thanks for responding! i'm glad it's working out for you. :)

By Tripletmom on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 11:48 am:

LOL-Picturing you jumping up and down to test it.LOL.I'm glad the mattress has already made a difference

By Crystal915 on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 06:13 pm:

I asked my neighbor today, she's actually had it close to a year, (Wow!! It didn't seem that long!) and she's still in love. She has the Deluxe, she said another friend has the higher-end model, and it's actually softer (too soft in her opinion) but if you don't have any complaints about the firmness yet, you will love it.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 08:25 pm:

The Euro bed is the firmest one they make. It's a denser material. Now, there was a bed more expensive than the one we got - it was a *really* thick mattress, with a pillow top, and at first it felt really comfortable, but we decided it was too soft. Plus, I would have had to replace most of my sheets, and after collecting several sets of high thread count sheets, I wasn't about to do that! The Euro bed is extremely firm, so if you like a firm mattress, this is the way to go.

A funny - my dog loves it too! She has the beginnings of hip problems and she can't get comfortable wherever she lies. We've noticed that she seems to really like the bed - in fact, she will stretch out and *dig in* if we try to make her move or get down off of it. LOL

By Crystal915 on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 09:00 pm:

Yeah, her friend has the pillow top, and thinks it's too soft.
