What is the situation in your area after Ike now??

By Kaye on Friday, September 26, 2008 - 03:06 pm:

For us we are okay. School will start back on Monday for my children. There is a still about 25% of our district without power. One of the big concerns is they have not done much debris removal, but that has been a work in progress. There is just so much to be removed. The trash people are working normal schedules, but they are not in charge of yard waste and such. Those a different workers.

We also have very few working traffic lights, it takes forever to get anywhere.

In my area that is it, slow, but recovering. I will have to take some photos. It is still so far from normal here, but getting closer.

However 10 miles south from me is such a different perspective. Lots and lots without power, still uninhabitable homes, people still just doing clean up. Everyone is so tired. I have gone out a couple of times and just picked a yard to rake. One day 2 adults, 5 kids, 2 hours and we managaged about 90% of a yard. One that had already been "cleaned" and debris removed. So even after all of that, it just takes a lot of time.

We get daily emails with requests to scouts, from our church, etc, from families that just need a few extra hand for a few extra hours.

My guess is, it will take 3 months for the not so hard hit areas to look normal. Galveston is so far from being there. Boliver which got hit very hard, is actually clean, because it got wiped completely clean. So that is a good news bad news thing! Nothing to do, but people there lost everything. Today is the first day that people are being allowed back to look.

I'm further north than Kaye is and things are getting back to normal around here. The biggest changes I've seen recently around my area are:

Traffic lights - we are finally to the point where more are working than not working

our walmart is finally this week not running on generators and have produce, meats, and refrigerated items now.

In my school district all but 8 schools went back to school yesterday (Thursday), the remaining schools are set to reopen on Monday.

There is still "some" houses without electricity in my area but the majority of the houses have been restored. I have a friend in the SW area of town who is still without power today and an aunt had her's restored today (she's in Pasadena).

My school district along with my sister's school district are offering free lunches and breakfast for 10 days to every kid. This came from the state.

Mosquitos are REALLY REALLY REALLY bad, you literally get attacked when you walk outside.

I feel very blessed to have the minimal damage that we had, I've been in tears just about every day over the damage done. I grew up in the area, I've been going to Galveston as long as I can remember and to see the destruction is very hard. Today I saw pictures of The Kemah Boardwalk for the first time and it was really really hard and had a good cry over it, it has special memories for me and it's pretty much destroyed.

I have some pics that can be posted of the Kemah Boardwalk, but I'm not sure how to post them. If someone will send me their email address I'll forward them all to be shared.

oh yeah...the mosquitos....uuggghhh!! I wish there were effective things to set out by doors so they won't hang out there. We have tried the plants and they don't work. But everything else seems to need lit or to be plugged in. I hate mosquitos!

By Karen~admin on Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 10:11 am:

Kaye/Christy - I feel your pain!!!!! Truly!!!! During our *normal* spring/summer seasons, the mosquitoes get so bad that you cannot open the door at night without dozens - yes, literally dozens flying in. They usually don't bite me, but they FEAST on DH.

We have taken precautions as best we can - any and every possible thing that will hold even the smallest amount of water where they might breed outside has been removed or turned upside down. After hurricanes it is definitely worse because you have so much moisture/water from the storm. I don't know what would be best to discourage them. Around here, the fogger trucks go street to street and fog at night at least once a week - not that it does more than polute the air, IMO...

Christy, I'll be happy to post your pics for you. My email is kay luvs sun at a o l d o t c o m (you can figure that out, right? LOL) :)
