Question to those suffering from Ike....

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2008: Question to those suffering from Ike....

I don't get to view the news too often lately, but during the times I do have it on, I am already not seeing much coverage about it. I'm shocked about that, but I guess all the bailouts and closings are taken top stories these days.

My husband said that one of the barrier islands in Galvastan has been deemed uninhabitable (sp?) and there will be no rebuilding there.

What else is going on that way? I did read the new post schools vs Ike.

I think the main thing we are dealing with in my area are 1) traffic lights not working so that it is taking longer to get most places and 2) most grocery stores are running on generators so that frozen foods, milk, produce, and meats are not available.

Just today did I notice that some of the restuarants and fast food places are opening back up and the gas lines are much shorter.

Well, best wishes to you! So much to over come. I was thinking the same thing about "the rest of the world just keeps on going like nothing happened." Isn't that just the truest thing. No matter what circumstances you are going thru in life and how upside down or sad your life can be....life doesn't stop around you. It never really hits you until it is your life that is all mixed up.

Galveston is dealing with a lot. Most people haven't been in to see their homes. The big news today, is maybe in 7 days they will be allowed back on the island. Bolivar got wiped clean, all but the light house (just like the 1900 hurricane).

Several communities in seabrook, nassau bay, etc, received many feet of water in their homes. The clean up is slow slow slow.

Power is only resumed to about half of the 4 million people in the area. This is also a big concern. It will be a hot humid weekend. We are used to ac.

I just came home today. Saddened to find much more damage that hubby thought, nothing big. But we won't get anything fixed for a couple of months, worker shortages and really they take them on a severity basis.

Things just aren't back to normal. No school, very few public places open. Monday should be different.

As of noon today we can drink our water...this is exciting! No more boil notice.

i have found khou.com to have great info.

Hey girls, just back late yesterday from my trip, so I have been completely out of the loop. I asked DH what he has seen on the Ike aftermath, and he said that surprisingly, very little - that the financial disaster with Lehman has been making the first...and 2nd, 3rd, 4th....pages of the news this week.

Kaye, I will check out khou - I was listening to khou online right around the time Ike hit.

How much damage did you have? Sounds the same as around here following Katrina - the severity of the damages will determine how quickly you can get a contractor, etc. AND - as in the days/months/years following Katrina, since you guys are dealing with a major disaster over there, as you know, beware of shady and dishonest contractors! Helps if you already have a relationship with one.

Good luck to all of you - keep us posted on things, OK??

I saw on the news today that somewhere in Galvaston, many people may no longer be property owners. The states that if the land grows, the owner gets more land, but if it shrinks, the owner looses property. Well, with the storm, the beach line isn't even the same now. And it will be about a year before they are willing to say when and where people may rebuild.

I can only imagine the fear of those who lost their property. I mean they would have NOTHING left, no home, no belongings and no place to rebuild. A TOTAL LOSS. Very scary.

I read about that, too. Ugh.
