How to Get Fried Meat Smell Out of the House???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: How to Get Fried Meat Smell Out of the House???
By Kate on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 07:51 am:

I fried both bacon and steak yesterday and I am convinced my entire house was misted with grease....even my wood floors are slippery and my husband swears I polished them. It also REEKS of greasy meat smell. Any advice on HOW to get rid of this awful, lingering smell?? Do you think all my upholstery will ever release the smell?? Help!! Please!!

By Texannie on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 08:30 am:

i swear by Febreeze for fabrics. i have heard setting out bowls of vinegar help absorb smells.

I know exactly the smell your talking about and I have no suggestions except to open some windows and perhaps fabreeze for the fabrics. I no longer cook bacon in the house for that very reason and all of our meat is now cooked on the grill instead of fried.

We fry bacon once in awhile. The smell seems to linger for a few days. It's quite annoying to me. We just open the windows and it helps air it out.

We RARELY fry anything, but I know the odor you are talking about! I get strong cooking odors when I cook with garlic and onions, and if I'm making anything with a gravy, like a roast (also a rare occurance LOL), the smell seems to linger on everything. Open the windows, Febreeze for the fabrics and Oust for the air. Also, clean your vent hood screen, and you might even need to wipe down walls or fans or appliances in your kitchen and change your A/C filter.

Oh, yes, Oust! it's great.
check your exhaust filters too.

Next time you fry, put a bowl of white vinegar near the stove top - somehow it helps. Wipe everthing down with a grease cutting cleaner.
Good luck,
Ame

I use an aroma pot and burn some green tea leaves as an insense on it. I wonder if you have the same kind of green tea leaves over there, but that is the way we usually deodorize our house after we fix those dishes that leave some smells. I hope it would help.

Okay, keep in mind this is coming from a vegetarian so I don't fry bacon, however, next time try making your bacon in the oven, put it on a baking sheet and I think you turn the oven up quite high. I think it takes a little longer but you should have less smell throughout your house as the grease would be contained within your oven.

Also, I believe your bacon will not shrivel up like it normally does. We stayed at a B&B one time and this is how she did her bacon. I believe you can also do it in the microwave, just cover it with paper towel first or you will have a mess to clean.

The Barefoot Contessa, on the Food Network, does her bacon in the oven, and it doesn't shrivel all up. I was thinking of doing bacon that way, the next time we need bacon.

From the Food Network

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Place a baking wire rack on a sheet pan and arrange the bacon on the rack in a single layer. Bake for 15 to 25 minutes, until the bacon is browned and crisp. Drain on paper towels and set aside.

I do mine in the oven!! We only make bacon occassionally on the weekends. When we do, I make it in the oven. I think it taste better.

I agree, I use Febreeze on fabrics, and I spray Oust. It gets rid of any odors without leaving a perfume smell.

Thanks everyone! Has anyone used the Oust candle? When you spray Oust, doesn't all that spray settle on your things? It seems like there would be a build up. However, I suppose that's preferable to the grease settling on everything~!!! :)

I buy the precooked bacon and microwave it. No frying bacon for me.

I do what Karen does.

To get smells like that out, I usually bake something like cookies. It's not as great for my waste line but does seem to cover up the smell!
