Yea!! One more week of school!!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: Yea!! One more week of school!!
By Debbie on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 09:36 am:

My dks are out of school in one week!! Well, they are suppose to make up a snow day on the Tuesday after Memorial Day, but since they have only missed 2 days of school this year, I am not making them go.

I am so excited. I love summer. We are suppose to be in the 90's this week! Ouch...from the 70's last week, to the 90's. The pool opens on Saturday. I am ready to sleep in, hit the pool, go to a few museums, and just hang out with my boys. They are getting big...10 and almost 8, and I know before long, they won't want to hang out with me anymore.

We have baseball tournaments every weekend in June, some out of town, which are fun for the kids. We are going to the lake in July with my whole family....dh and I are going to San Francisco for 4 days before the lake. Dh won a trip at work, so it is paid for, makes it even better.

What are you up to this summer???

By Trina~moderator on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 09:42 am:

My kids don't get out until June 20th.

By Annie2 on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 10:01 am:

My kids get out May 30th. I'm looking forward to summer. The girls will be attending cheer camp in June and ds will attend band camp. He's going into sixth grade and has decided to play the clarinet.
We'll probably do day trips to local areas and of course lots of beach time.
DD will be a senior this year so we may try to check out some colleges that are near us.

By Tayjar on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 10:04 am:

My kids were supposed to be done on May 23 but since we had so many snow days they have to go until May 30. Report card pickup is June 2.

We have tons of softball games and baseball games planned. Both kids are doing travel teams so we are going to be in different towns on some weekends.

We have several camping trips planned. We are going to Michigan for a week, and have two different trips planned to Missouri planned plus some close weekend trips.

And, I am taking my MIL and my kids with me on a business trip to Nashville for a few days.

We have 2.5 weeks left. June 3, have to make up snow days. Bummer! But it's getting closer!!! Woo hoo!!!

I start a 5 week class on May 27. M-F in the mornings and then I work in the afternoons. So I am kind of bummed I wont get to hang out with the kids much. We have a trip planned with family in July though! I took off 9 days. So am reallyyyy looking forward to that time with the kids and family. :)

Our kids were supposed to be done on May 30th. We had 1 extra snow day and 5 flood days though. They did submit legislation to not make the kids make them up, but apparently there is too much junk going on in Ohio right now for them to get to it. LOL So there is still a slight chance that they will act on it, but more than likely, June 9th will be their last day!

Emily has 16 days of school left, after today. She has to go one extra day, because of the snowstorm we had on Feb. 6th and she can't get out of it, since she has exams to take. Sheboygan schools are done on June 12th.

Sarah, since she is in college, is already home for the summer. We brought her home this past Friday.

2 years ago we lived dangerously and planned our vadcation to start the day after school was out (June 9th and vaca started June 10th, which was a Saturday.). If there had been a day to make-up, I don't know what we would have done! It all worked out, though.)

By Bellajoe on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 11:21 am:

Sounds like a fun summer Debbie.

My kids get out June 5th. June 7th we fly to Disney World. We are meeting my sister and her family there. We rented a house about 5 minutes from the parks and we will be there for a week. We have been planning this vacation for 4 years, since my sisters girls were babies. I can't believe it's finally here.

In July, dh and I fly to NYC for our 10 year anniversary trip for the weekend. The following week the kids go to Vacation Bible School which I am volunteering for. It's our first time doing this, hopefully it's as fun as everyone says it is. We are also going to a water park with the VBS people.
The weekend after VBS we are going to Cincinnati for a family reunion for the weekend.
Gosh we already have a pretty packed summer.
In between our little trips, we will be swimming at the pool and trying to relax before the school year starts up again.

3.5 weeks, June 11th. no snow days here.

By Cat on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 03:04 pm:

School's out here this Friday (1/2 day at that!). I'm looking forward to it. I love the freedom of summer. Of course, Randy has football practice (conditioning, they're not allowed to call it practice) every Monday night and every Thursday morning. That'll keep us busy.

By Amecmom on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 07:38 pm:

Amazing!!! We don't get out until June 26! And we had one snow day left over, so we get Friday and Monday for Memorial Day weekend.
It amazes me how early some states get out - and go back. I can't imagine starting school in August as I'm sure some of you do. It would be way too hot here.

Ame, we start school the last week in August and still don't get out until mid to late June.

By Tunnia on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 08:17 pm:

My dks get out this Wednesday and ds shouted "Only two more days of school left" as soon as he walked through the door tonight.

Our summer starts off with a bang this upcoming weekend with my brother's wedding in Florida. Then dd leaves for sports camp for a week on the first of June. I am going to work that first week of June and then take five weeks off (I love my flexible job!:)). At the end of June dh is taking the cub scouts camping, fishing, and hiking. He is trying to talk me into going too, but it is a primitive campground and with no running water and no electricity camping there is a little too "roughing it" for me. LOL It would be fun though and I might go if dh takes the fifth wheel with a full tank of water and the generator. I can do without the AC, but I have to have my toilet and shower and at least a fan! We are going to the beach in July for a week and a half. I have volunteered to work VBS at our church later in July and then my dks go back to school at the beginning of August. It's going to be a busy summer for us, but then it always is.:)

By Amecmom on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 09:34 pm:

Wow, Trina, do does your school go more than the 180 days required in New York? We go back the Monday after Labor Day - it's early this year :( and finish sometime the last full week in June.
If you end on the 20th and begin the last week in August, it sounds like you do go 180 days, but your schools are a week ahead of ours.

Trina, how much time do you get off for Thanksgiving and Christmas, though? We only get the Thursday and Friday off, and for Christmas, it's just the week of Christmas, plus another day or two. I know some schools get a week off for Thanksgiving and 2 weeks off at Christmas.

This past December, we got out early on the 21st of December and went back January 2nd. (22 and 23 were the weekend.)

By Cat on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 11:28 pm:

We go back August 6th. We get 2 weeks off in October, 2 weeks for Christmas, and 2 weeks in March/April plus about 14 other holidays, teacher work days, staff development days, etc. Looking at the calendar it seems like they have a day off about every 2-3 weeks for some reason or another.

By Jackie on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 05:49 am:

My kids get done June 13th. I love summer vacation. I know a lot of parents dread it. I love it. I loved summer as a kid and still love it as an adult. Sure sometimes it gets a little crazy around here with the kids fighting/arguing...but on the whole I love what summer vacation represents. I love the lazy days of summer, with no "real" schedule. I like that it doesnt get dark until 9pm. I love the walks after dinner when the sun is starting to fade. I love listening to the ice cream truck play its music.
The week after school gets out, my parents will be in town for a visit. My son goes to boyscout camp late July. In late August we will go on our cruise. In between all that, there will be playdates, swimming, storytimes etc...Im pretty sure we will all keep busy.:)

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 08:21 am:

I've always loved summer, too! It was so nice to not have to get up to get kids ready for school!

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 09:36 am:

We have 180 days, only Thurs/Fri off for Thanksgiving and a week at Christmas. We do have a week off in February and another in April, so that could be it. We also have to make up Snow Days in June.

I love summer! :)

By Breann on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 11:42 am:

My kids get out this Friday. It's usually the same time each year, the Friday before Memorial Day. We start school around the 16th of August.
