LG Washer and Dryer

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: LG Washer and Dryer
By Tunnia on Sunday, May 18, 2008 - 05:26 pm:

I finally got my new front loading washer and dryer! Thank you to those who gave me feedback on their washers and dryers back in April. I appreciated the info! I ended up going with the LG's. I got the steam washer and a dryer without steam. We didn't think we would use the steam feature on the dryer enough to be worth the difference in cost (the steam dryer was double the price of the dryer without steam). We got a 4.2cu washer and a 7.3cu dryer and now I will be able to wash my king-size comforters and the sleeping bags at home instead of taking them to the laundry mat. We got a really great deal and ended up paying paying only around $1300. I would have never believed that I could be so excited about a washer and dryer!!!:)

For those of you with the LG steam washer, if you have any tips for me, I'd love to hear them. I've been reading the instruction manual while dh is installing and there are so many bells and whistles on this thing that it's a bit overwhelming! I'm sure I will get the hang of all the features in time though.

Congrats on your new purchase - you will love them. We looked @ LG's, ended up getting Kenmores. Both my washer and dryer have the steam feature - I actually use the steam cycle on the dryer more. Enjoy!

Lucky you! I sometimes wish I had a bigger washer, for those quilts!

Ohhh, I have washer and drier envy. Congrats and enjoy!!! Mine are 9yrs old and my clothes do not come out clean like they use too, the washer is too small, and it smells funny. lol GROSS!

I have the LG front loaders, and love them. Unfortuantely, the steam feature came out the year after I got mine. I would love to have it.

Ok, I am officially in love!:) I just finished my first load in the new machines and I am really impressed. I did a load of towels and dish and cleaning rags and they look and smell so good. I even made my dh smell the dusting rag because the polish smell was no longer there. My old washer never got the polish smell out. Also, I couldn't believe the dry time. The load of towels dried in a half and hour. My old dryer would take an hour and a half. Oh, and almost no lint in the filter! My old dryer would have a hand-full of lint every time I ran it. My second load is running now and I literally fit two baskets of clothes into the washer at once. I hope I am not sounding braggy or anything. I am just so darned thrilled with these machines and I can't call any of my friends at 10:30pm to talk about my washer and dryer or they would think I'm nuts and wouldn't want to be friends with me any longer so I'm posting here. LOL

I do have a couple of questions for those of you with front loader washers--
1. It is normal for it to take an hour to wash a load?
2. Do you go by the measurments on the bottle of detergent or fill it to the max line on the machine's dispenser?

By Conni on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 09:09 am:

I always conserve my soap. I never use as much as it calls for and then I add a little fabric softener. Of course, I am one that tears my drier sheets in half as well, to make them last longer. LOL So don't go by what I say! ha

Can you explain the steam feature? I don't get what it does on the washer or drier???

By Karen~admin on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 09:16 am:

I use the measurements on the bottles.

The shortest *regular wash* time on my new washer is about 50 minutes (?). When I do the white cycle, it's nearly 2 hours, that is including an optional 2nd rinse cycle that I use because I use bleach on my whites, but let me tell you, my whites have NEVER looked or smelled so clean!

DH has even commented on how the clothes look and smell with the new machines.

My old dryer use to take nearly 3 hours to dry a load of jeans or towels. The new one will dry a HUGE load in 45 minutes. By HUGE, I mean 10 pairs of adult jeans, or 12 towels.

Conni, have you tried cleaning your washer by running a cycle of bleach or vinegar only through?

By Kaye on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 11:44 am:

Conni, my washer has that smell too. It is 16 years old, what do I expect. I have found that if I run a bleach load through it, it helps alot. Also we leave the lid open at all times when we aren't running a load.

By Karen~admin on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 12:02 pm:

Leaving the lid closed when it's not being used encourages mold/mildew growth. We went on vacation for 2 weeks once and came home to find we had left the lid on the washer closed - the smell was AWFUL. I'd definitely try running a *strong* bleach *empty* load and see if that helps.

I always keep my front load washer door open when not in use.

By Vicki on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 03:38 pm:

Same here, my washer is open when not in use.

Don't feel weird about being excited about your new set. Everyone of us that have the front loaders knows EXACTLY your excitment. LOL I remember LOOKING for dirty things to run through it. LOL I also remember trying to watch it wash, but my doors have a dark tint and I can't see a darn thing, but I stood there like a goof just watching. LOL

Yep, I understand :)
I hate doing laundry but I LOVE my washer & dryer :)
Doing more laundry in less time is such a good thing!

By Tunnia on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 07:58 pm:

Thanks for the answers to my questions. I was just wondering if I needed to fill the detergent cup all the way since my washer is so large and this washer does take a lot longer to run than my old washer did so I was wondering about that too.

Vicki, I am guilty of looking for things to wash just so that I can play with the machines. LOL I even managed to run four loads of laundry today even though I wasn't home.

Today I used the delay wash option which is really cool! The washer was finishing up when I got home from work and I was able to just pop the load into the dryer immediately. I washed all my bedding on the Allergine cycle tonight and right now my king size comforter is in the dryer. Everyone in the family loves the little song the washer plays when it's done and my dks keep an eye on the timer and stand by the washer when it's almost done so they can listen to it.:) I was telling my boss all about the machines at work today (she and her dh have been talking about getting new machines) and now she wants the LGs and was planning on talking to her dh into them tonight.:)

Connie, the steam feature on the washer is mostly used for extra cleaning. I have features on my washer called Allergine and Sanitary that uses really hot water and steam to get things really clean and to kill allergines like dust mites. I can also use the steam feature without a wash to to get wrinkles and odors out of clothing or I can use the steam feature during a wash to get tough stains out.

Okay, not a washing machine, but as a kid, when my family got a dishwasher, we were all sitting at the kitchen table, listening to it wash the dishes! LOL! (late 60's to early 70's. I can't remember exactly when it was anymore!)
