Not a good day

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: Not a good day
By Debbie on Saturday, May 10, 2008 - 05:36 pm:

First, my oldest has been complaining about his wrist, he fell hard last Friday during a run/walkathon at school. He played baseball all weekend, and didn't say a thing, so when he mentioned it this week, I blew it off. He played baseball again this weekend, and played terrible, still complaining about the wrist. So, I took him in, and he has a fractured ulna. I have to take him Monday to an ortho doctor to be casted. Right in time for summer, not to mention he will miss the rest of his baseball season.

Then, I called my Grandmother, who has been sick and in he hospital the last month. She just went home yesterday. She passed away this afternoon. She was 97, and had lived a long, wonderful life(her words)

So, we're are not starting off Mother's Day weekend too well.

I'm so very sorry, my deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Will they be able to give your ds the waterproof cast? I saw a few kids last summer at the waterpark with casts on and they were able to go in the water with theirs.

Oh, Debbie. I'm so sorry about your ds's wrist and your grandmother. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs

Debbie, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother and your son's injury, just in time for summer. {{{HUS}}}

Thanks everyone!

I am hoping they can do a waterproof cast. If not, the doctor said they make an airtight bag you can put over it to swim?? We will find out everything on Monday. My ds is VERY moody tonight. I think it is sinking in. He is really upset because he was suppose to go to a baseball camp the first week of summer, and then a day camp the 2nd week. Now, he can't do either.

Debbie sorry to hear about your loss.

As for the cast. Invest in some glad press and seal, it really helps the whole shower and keep it dry thing. I was casted last summer, after the first few days of casting and the itching goes away it wasn't horrible. We did go sledding in the sand and that was quite a mess. A waterproof cast is all about the inside material, the outside stuff now is all waterproof.

Debbie, I'm so sorry about your Grandmother - AND about DS's fracture.

All casts now are fiberglass, which is waterproof. The difference is the material they use for the liner underneath the cast. When I tore my tendon, I paid the extra $100 (out of pocket, not covered by insurance) for the waterproof liner, and I will say it's not nearly as comfortable as the regular cotton batting type stuff they normally use, because with the cotton, you can have it wrapped thicker so the cast is more comfortable.

The waterproof stuff is such that you can use a blow dryer on cool and blow it down the cast to dry it out. If having a waterproof cast is a must, then by all means, go for it. I hope he heals quickly!

I'm so sorry for your loss! I'm sorry about your DS's arm too--not fun. I hope things look up for you!

I'm sorry for your loss.

Just wanted to tell you that four years ago, my dd broke her leg at an end of school picnic at the park. We didn't know it was broken for TWO WEEKS! She had to get a cast from her thigh down to her toes and it was NOT waterproof so that was a miserable summer! She loves the water and going to the pool and lake is her favorite thing to do!

Thankfully, it should only be for several weeks, and with it being a small cast on his arm, he should be able to do more, and hopefully get a waterproof one!

(((Hugs))) I am so sorry Debbie.

And your ds must be one tough cookie. :(

How is he doing today? Poor thing. Hugs to you. Take care of yourself, too.

By Rayelle on Monday, May 12, 2008 - 03:50 pm:

Oh, poor guy. I'm sorry for the loss of your grandmother.

By Debbie on Monday, May 12, 2008 - 04:15 pm:

Thank you everyone!

It has been a frustrating day!!

Times like these, I hate HMO. I am still waiting for auth. to take ds to the ortho. His doctor said they should be able to get him in asap as soon as they get the authorization. I was hoping to get him in today, but it may not be until tomorrow or Wed. Urggg....

Then, I just found out they are having the memorial for my Grandmother this Saturday. She donated her body to science, and then will be cremated. There was no hurry for the memorial because her body won't even be there. I am in Oklahoma, and she is in New Jersey. I can't get a flight for under $900.00, so I guess I am not going. I am upset that my Uncles didn't take in to account the people that have to travel from far away. But, I shouldn't be suprised, this is typical of them.

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, May 12, 2008 - 05:23 pm:

Debbie, I am so sorry for your loss. It's a shame you cannot attend the memorial service. Perhaps you can ask your pastor to say a special prayer during your own church service, in memory. Or, in my church people can contribute for the cost of the alter flowers and the worship bulletin carries a note that the flowers are in "honor of" or in "memory of" a particular person.

Too bad about your son. And yes, HMOs are terribly, terribly frustrating. With mine I only have to get a referral from my primary, but I know that some make you jump through even more hoops, and it's absurd. Thank goodness, however, that you at least have insurance.

By Debbie on Monday, May 12, 2008 - 05:41 pm:

Great suggestions, Ginny. I can do a dedication in our church bulletin, and make a donation for the flowers in her name. Thank you for reminding me of those things.

My Dad is not upset that I am not going. He doesn't want me to spend the money. I am happy that I was able to see her not that long ago, and she was able to see the boys. I talked to her every Sunday, and made sure to do special things for her. I think that is what is important. It was very weird yesterday not to make my Sunday call to her. She was actually found with all the family photos around her, and she was holding the most recent photo of my two boys. The last year had been hard on her as far as her physical health. I think she was very ready to go. I think she was just waiting until she was back home surrounded by her things.

I am sorry to hear of your loss Debbie.

I hope that you are able to get your son in soon and that the waterproof cast is able to happen for him.

Sending you hugs!
