Hair question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2008: Hair question

My dd hates to have her hair done, she is 4.
She gets horrible tangles in it & just cries when I try to comb it out. When I do get it combed out it has so much static in it & just stands up.
I was told not to use a conditioner in it because that is what is causing it to fly away. I was given a Paul Mitchell baby shampoo to use in it & that didn't work. I was told to use this sunflower leave in conditioner to help with the tangles, that just makes it have more static.
Does anyone have any kind of advice? She has thin hair.

No reason you can't use a little bit of conditioner on her or use a two in one shampoo. We use a spray in detangler and that helps with the tangles. It is a Suave product. I have bought professional products (I'm a hairdresser) and haven't found anything that works any better than the Suave. As far as flyaways and static goes, lightly run a dryer sheet on her hair once it's detangled. It helps a ton. Good luck.

My DD (9) has fine hair. For the most part, she takes care of it on her own now, but used to HATE having it combed. The slightest tangles would make her scream. The first thing I did was have it cut into a short bob. That alone was a big help, because it was low maintenance. The other trick that worked well was to apply conditioner after washing, and before rinsing use a pick to comb out the tangles. Then rinse thoroughly and pick again. MUCH easier and less stressful! I found that NOT using conditioner in DD's hair made it more static prone.

We have the Back to Basics Sunflower spray detangler and love it, but they have discontinued it. The best shampoo for her is the Back to Basics Wildberry (volumizer) but it has been discontinued also. Once we run out we'll have to find something else. :(

We do like Paul Mitchell Shampoo One and their Detangler conditioner. :)

Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be.

Mads had hers cut off. It's always been short because she has such fine hair and it never grows in right, but she got a boy cut this year. She didn't want to mess with it, or let me mess with it, and actually asked for the haircut. To be honest, I would give the world to have your problem, I wish my little girl had long locks, no matter how much of a pain they can be!!

Cut it! My dd is 11 and we have had it cut short a lot. We also cut it in a stacked cut in the back because it makes it look so much fuller. The longer the length, the heavier it is and the flatter it will be, too.

We seriously have problems with flyaway hair, too! We still do, but we don't go without conditioner because to us, it helps with the static. Dryer sheets definitely help. I also run just a tad of hair gel over it after styling it.

When my kids were little, they both had short hair. It was easier on them and easier on me. Emily hated having her hair brushed. Around 3rd or 4th grade, they both wanted to grow out their bangs, and as their hair grew longer then, they were able to better take care of it themselves.

My hair has always been terribly tangled. My youngest sister's too. She seriously never combed her hair when she was younger because it was always a mess and it hurt to brush it. She wouldn't let my mother, my other two sisters, or me anywhere near her hair. Can you imagine?!

I always use a leave in conditioner after washing my hair and it helps. I just found some olive oil lotion at Target and it seems to help with the flyaways. (It's for other stuff, too, so I'd recommend reading the label to see if it helps with your needs.)

My sister started using a detangler, but I can't remember which one.

Oh and we both have fairly long hair-it's down to our waists.

one thing you can do is put about a pea to dime size amount of conditioner in a water bottle and mist it right after she has her hair washed. any conditoner will work. I still use it on dd hair she has bad tangles also has she had her hair trimed yet or does she still have baby hair. Baby hair tends to tangle. Sorry I am rambling but with the small amount of conditoner in the spray bottle it will weigh the hair down and it wont fly away. Something they taught us in beauty school

conditioner when you wash it. Comb it out very carefully with the conditioner in and hold the hair so that it does not pull.
Use a leave in conditioner spray daily.
Hopw it helps.

Thank you guys. I know the leave in I have now is a Back to Basics brand that Trina says has been discontinued.
Lots of great suggestions. I think I will start with the Suave conditioner & comb it through like you all have suggested.
She wants to grow her hair out, I had it cut short because of the problems. I do think that if she continues to throw the fits that I will have to cut it again.

I think I posted almost the exact same post when my youngest was 4yo. We started using a teentsy bit of Biosilk on her hair and we've never looked back. It's amazing!
