Pantry Organizing Tips??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2008: Pantry Organizing Tips??
By Bellajoe on Monday, March 17, 2008 - 08:42 am:

I have a corner pantry closet in my kitchen. It's a good size pantry. I do organize it but just a week later it is a mess again. I try to keep baking needs together, cereals together, snacks together, etc. But things end up in front of other things and they end up not being easy to get to, and it just becomes a mess again.

does anyone else have this type of pantry and if you do, is yours organized? How do you do it so it's easy to see what you have and easy to get to? It's driving me and dh nuts.
TIA

Well not exactly this type. mines in in my kitchen it's a floor to ceiling, has four 4( each shelfs is two shelfs in one) deep shelfs. I have dedicated the bottom two to my kids ( especially for my 4 yo) he is aboe to get fruit snacks, fruit cups, jello, pudding, etc. My top shelf I have to use a step stool but it's dediated to my prepared/box items Hamburger Helper, Macaronni & Cheese, Cake mixes,Rice, etc. boxes are laind flat with top of box facing the out so that I can view wtih out touching, other items on thsi shelf is a organizer rack which hold my alumimun foil, wax paper, ziplock bags, etc. there is still room , so I keep my partners coffee and the cooking grease up here ( too high for ym 4 you to reach) Next shelf down I have all my can goods for my use and the kids Chef-Boy-Ardee, commdinments, seasonings cans are stacked ( jumbo two to stack) small three to a stack, the kids micro and can speghetti, easy mac(my daughter prepares this for herself and my son when she is sitting or I don't feel like cooking)is placed in front of the canned foods for the hosue for easier access for her. I found I had more space stackign ym spices on top of one another and takign the spice rachk out.
Third Shelf ( the one my son can reach) I have a old box that the Oodle Noodles where I keep all those tiny bags of chips you get in the fritolay bag that when yuo open they are just falling out every where. to the back of this shelf since my daughter is the one to prepare oodle noodle I have two boxs ( cases) stacked on top of each other, I replace as needed. my son has a colum iwth hsi fruit stnacs, pudding and jello, micropopcorn, snack crackers, cookies. Since my son fixes his own cereal all the cereal is to the front of the cabinet and line up ( typically 4 to 5 boxes are in ym hosue at a time.) bottom shelf we wuse for liquids, water, sodas, gataride, caprisuns, etc, the back is used to store extra bags to flour, sugar, grease. the only shelf that seems to get messy is the thrid shelf, and amazingle it's not from my kids , its' me, in the am's on the way otu ther door my son will ask for somethgn and I go in and not place back. the older I have gotten the more neater I have become I dont' liek clutter or things just lying around , So my kids knwo that there s a place for everything and everythign has it's place. So they knwothat if something is out of place in the cabinet that I wll get upset andtey willhear aout ti , ususally they will hear about it. I rearange the cabinet about once amonth or every two weeks depending on how ofeten I grocery shop so that I can move older stuff to the front to be used before newer stuff. I knwo that you didnt' ask for all of this , I may have misunderstood the question. But I think you where asking how was someiwe's else cabinet organized.

The BEST pantry I ever had was the one I thought I would hate the most. It was very thin. I had a floor to ceiling pantry on either side of a tiny hallway that were only as deep as maybe two cans. Therefore, EVERYTHING was in site. And the big stuff like cereal went into an easy to reach cabinet. Some boxes I put in the pantry and I could see the entire box, not just the side. I was also selling tupperware at the time and invested in LOTS of their organizing plastics.

I don't think I would ever like a corner pantry. Is this a walk in? If it is a walk in, you could change all the shelving to thin shelves and have a center area for larger boxes? If it is just a pantry with a lazy susan type thing, I have no suggestions.

And my current pantry is skinny and deep. I am ALWAYS loosing stuff and things are always getting out of order.

In my deep shelves I use baskets.
I put like goods in each basket. Every area of my pantry is labeled and I use a lot of Tupperware. All cereals go in a plastic container.
All baking items (flour, sugars, etc) are also in plastic containers.
One shelf is devoted to baking, another soups, etc. As long as you have a system in place, it is easy to maintain it.
For the items that "get lost" in the back, I have stacking shelves.
I think a Lazy Susan would work great for the corner. My mom had one and it worked great.

Yes, it's a walk in pantry in the corner of our kitchen. It is big with 3 shelves and lots of space in between them.

The corner is mostly the problem. It's easy to lose things in the corner especially because it's deep. A lazy susan won't really do because the items are big such as: bags of chips, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, crackers, etc.
Maybe I will go to Linen's and Things tomorrow and just see if they have anything that will help.

I like the idea of the baskets. That will be helpful for the chips and snacks.
