What do you think?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2008: What do you think?
By Crystal915 on Thursday, February 7, 2008 - 04:08 pm:

Shane and I have been sick since the weekend, he stayed home on Monday (which was a big day at school, so I know he was sick to want to stay home!) but has seemed better since then. The only thing is yesterday he came home from the sitter's at 1830, and went right to sleep, slept through the night. This morning he said he felt fine, but he fell to the floor while peeing. I sometimes get dizzy in the morning, especially if I'm not feeling well, but he said he felt fine afterwards, and didn't have a fever, so he went to school. I, on the other hand, am not doing so good. I slept all day Monday, felt ok enough to run some errands on Tuesday, then slept all day yesterday. I've been running a fever, but it comes down with Dayquil, I've been taking Tussin to break up the mucus in my chest, but my chest hurts BAD and the cough produces very little. I've had body aches, which made me think flu, but currently have fever, cold sweats, chills, chest pain, body aches, and a pretty much non-productive cough, and am going on 4+ days here. This is starting to sound like symptoms of pneumonia, and I'm starting to worry. My temp before taking meds today was 103F, and even after getting it down with Dayquil I still have bad chills, and feverish dreams. Would you go in to the doc/urgent care? I don't want to go in if there is nothing they can do, especially because it's cold and snowy, and it's a major ordeal to just get up off the couch to use the restroom, but I don't want to end up in the hospital with something severe. Also, I dropped off groceries to a friend with her infant (3 mo) on Tuesday, thinking I was better, and now I'm worried I'll have given the baby something bad. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

Sidenote: I just called my friend and gave her a heads up about the baby, she already had an appointment scheduled for Monday, and the baby seems to be fine, but I wanted to make sure she knew what was going on, and let the docs know. Now if only I can get better!

With a fever, chills, dizziness, bad cough and chest pain, I would definitely head for urgentcare or the ER. It sure sounds like pneumonia to me, and they don't hospitalize people with pneumonia unless they are on the verge of dying. Antibiotics work very nicely. I'd be worried about Shane's dizziness, too. My middle son had flu and got dehydrated, got up to pee, got dizzy, fell, and has a nasty scar at the edge of his jaw where he hit the commode. (The commode has no scars.) In the meantime, do drink lots of fluids, both to guard against dehydration and to keep your fever down. Jello is good too, and anything with sugar, because I'll bet you're not eating worth a darn.

I had pneumonia last year, and I felt much like what you are describing. The reason the cough was non-productive (for me) was that my airways were so constricted, I needed something other than my regular asthma meds to open it up, and to break it up. My chest hurt SO bad when I coughed, and it was making me feel like my head would split open from coughing. However, I had pneumonia as a complication from the flu.

I agree with Ginny though, you guys should see a doctor.

Hope you are better soon!

Crystal, I agree with Ginny and Karen. Go to the doc., get something better than Dayquil and get well soon!

If your son still feels sick, i'd take him to the doc before it gets worse.

hope you feel better real soon!

Crystal, dd and I just went through much of what you've described. We both had bronchitis, and poor Lara had an ear infection. The doctor was able to give me a cough syrup that helped with the painful cough. That in itself helped so much. Lara is still taking medication, but she is much better.

I hope you'll feel better, soon Crystal! The hardest part for me was the night time cough. No sleep makes it so much harder to recover. I think you might be wise to go into the doctor before you feel worse.
Take care, okay?

Sounds like both of you should go see the doctor. When I had pneumonia, I didn't have much of a temp and I didn't have much of a cough, but I could barely take a deep breath, because it hurt too bad, so I felt like I could hardly breathe.

Bronchitas for my house hold. And it was everything you are describing. I had it 2 months ago didn't go to the Dr got it again and went come to find out it never went away from teh time before and the second time I was on the verge of the hospital from being so run down and sick. Don't mess go to the Dr. Shane too!@!!

By Conni on Thursday, February 7, 2008 - 11:48 pm:

My Mom and Dad had similar symptoms and are just getting over what was diagnosed as Bronchitis.

Hope you all feel better soon!! (((HUGS)))

Thanks, everyone. I went to urgent care today, because the cold sweats were waking me up drenched every half hour. They didn't do the chest xray to confirm pneumonia, because I definitely have acute sinusitis, and the Z-Pak they gave me will cover both, but the NP suspected I had both. Pretty much everything mentioned above about breathing, coughing, and airway constriction is dead-on, the chest pains are miserable. So, I'm on codeine cough syrup and the anti-biotics, we'll see how it goes from here. Shane is 100% today, but I'll be keeping a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't decline over the weekend. Thanks again, I appreciate the advice and concern!! I'm headed back to bed now!
