What would you do?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: What would you do?
By Kaye on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 07:45 pm:

Okay so my almost 14 year old dd woke up this am, fine, ate breakfast, went to school. She gets on the bus at 8:20. At 10 am the nurse calls, she apparently came to the office at 9:40 (still 1st period), said her tummy hurt. She started having frequent and loose bms, so the nurse called. I had her home by 10:15. She started throwing up and having more quality bathroom time by 11. She was completely pale and looked horrible. She started her period last night. So I fed her the blueberry yogart (the miracle cure). So by noon she has been fine. I gave her some crackers and juice at 3. She is wanting to eat dinner now.

The question is...school or no school tomorrow? Technically we have a 24 hour rule. But I know she is fine now. I am sure she isn't contagious (no temp, really 100%). I guess I worry about her immunity to illness number two, but....

Anyway, just curious what other moms would do. I lean towards keeping her home, my husband thinks I should send her.

By Tonya on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 07:52 pm:

If she wakes up in the morning and is fine send her to school. She is old enough to know her own body and know what is going on with it.

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 08:03 pm:

Ditto Tonya. If she calls again, you can always go pick her up.

I used to get diarrhea when I first got my period when I was young, several friends of mine did also, never could figure *that* out!

By Tink on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 08:05 pm:

It all sounds menstrual related to me so I'd send her tomorrow, if she's still feeling A-OK.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 08:13 pm:

I would let her make the call, if she is a responsible teen. I had similar issues too.

By Dramamamma on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 08:39 pm:

another for letting her decide and another for similar issues on the first or second day of my periods.

By Beth on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 08:47 pm:

Okay I will go against the grain. Throwing up like that I would keep her home. My dk's have "gotten better" to only get worse later. I don't think one more day will hurt her.

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 08:49 pm:

i've never heard of someone throwing up during their period. that is news to me!

i agree that if she is fine now, and fine in the a.m. then go ahead and send her.

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 09:28 pm:

Oops, I missed the *throwing up* part, sorry! In that case, it could be a virus.......I'd wait and see how she is in the morning.

By Tayjar on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 09:32 pm:

Bellajoe, you are one lucky gal. Until I was in my mid 20s, I would throw up, get severe headaches, diarrhea, and cramps in my ankles and thighs for the first day or so.

I'd see how it goes. Let her get a good nights sleep and see how she feels in the a.m. If she decides to go to school, let her know you will come and get her if she starts to feel bad again. I hope she feels better tomorrow.

By Tonya on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 10:02 pm:

I still have months where I throw up a few times the 1st and 2nd day of my period. Again I say her call if she is responsible enough to make those types of calls. Good luck.

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 10:23 pm:

I think I'd keep her home, just in case. Also, some of the moms mentioned her having her period, but I'm confused. When you said "1st period", did you mean menstrual or class??

By Kaye on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 10:27 pm:

she was in 1st period, but had also started her period the night before...a little fuzzy. sorry! She has been having periods for about 2 years now, this would be new. I never vomit, but get the other.

I am going to wait and see, But I still haven't fed her today. She has had some crackers and some juice and yogart, but really just isn't hungry.

By Melanie on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - 10:46 pm:

I agree with the others to see if she is feeling okay in the morning. It could certainly be related to her cycle.

I started getting severe cramps complete with throwing up each month at the age of 15, two years after I had started. The first time was when I was at school in the nurses office. I continued that pattern every month until my first pregnancy.

By Tink on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 12:12 pm:

So how was DD this morning, Kaye?

By Annie2 on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 01:35 pm:

I would throw up, stomach issues and severe cramps when I was a teenager and early 20's. My 16 year old dd is the same way. i swear I picked her up a day from school every month last year. It didn't start until many months or even a year of us having our periods. My periods are different now, no cramps but dd takes naprosyn for her cramps. I also put her on the pill to lighten her periods; which hasn't been successful, yet.
How was your dd this am?

By Kaye on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 01:42 pm:

I made the decision last night to let her stay home for the day. If she felt good, I would make her clean her room. WELL I woke everyone up this morning, she popped up and got dressed, so I sent her. Oh well. She is always the let me stay home kid and since she didn't even ask. I asked her how she felt and she said just fine. It is almost 1 and no calls, so I guess she is fine.

I do think she had a little virus, but who knows, it could just be period related. Our bodies are just so strange!
