ACK!!! My vacuum cleaner died!!!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2004: ACK!!! My vacuum cleaner died!!!
By Texannie on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 04:10 pm:

I need one that really does a good job picking up pet hairb, but I just can't afford to spend $400 on a new vacuum.

By Mommierenee on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

We bought a really expensive one at the goodwill for 20 dollars. We've had it for about 6 months now & only had to buy a bag & a belt for it. Just be sure they let you plug it in & try it before you buy it!

By Kay on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 04:21 pm:

I won't bring myself to spend $100, much less $400 for a vacuum cleaner! I got our Hoover for about $70 and it's lightweight, picks things up wonderfully and has a removeable accessory pack.

I bought a Eureka Whirlwind (bagless) from Sams club last year. I do not remember exactly what I paid but it was less than $100. I have 4 cats and 2 dogs (and a constant supply of kids runnning throughout) and this is the best vaccum cleaner I have ever owned!
I had the $1000 vacuum cleaner--cannot think of the name. The one where a salesman comes to your house. Anyway I inherited that from a grandmother and it weighed a ton and did not have any where near the suction power of my cheap Eureka!

We have a Kenmore power mate "whispertone" series. It is very nice and very quiet too. But, it is a little more pricey than some other vacuums on the market. We have had it for 7 years and it's still working like a charm. We will buy another one when/if this one ever dies.

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 05:14 pm:

Is there a vacuum repair place near you? Worth looking into before buying a new vacuum.

By Texannie on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 05:41 pm:

I did, Trina, and my rule is if it costs more than half to replace, get a new one. But that's the catch 22..a really good new one is more than half, but for the same model it was too expensive to repair.

I seem to either buy bad ones or am hard on them, cause I have been through a ton. I keep telling dh that we just need to suck up and buy a "good" one, but he won't. rme

Texannie,
I just bought a new vacuum from Best Buy. They had a Hoover bagless on sale for about $80.00. My Dirt Devil died after less than a year of use. I was NOT happy!!! I would recommend going to Best Buy, because not only do they price match, but they offer a 4 year warranty for vacuums. It's $20, but if your vacuum goes kaput, or has any problems during that 4 years, they will replace it. I didn't get the warranty this time, but did for my washer and dryer.

By Kay on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 07:44 pm:

Funny you should mention the Dirt Devil - my husband bought one of those, and it was the worst thing in the world! It wouldn't pick up much at all....it was the last time I let *him* pick out a major appliance like that!

By Texannie on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 08:18 pm:

Don't tell me that, Kay! After reading a gazillion reviews each one contradicting the other, I picked the Dirt Devil Ultra Vision cause it was one of the few (in my price range) that praised the picking up pet hair.
I hate this!!!!!!!!!!!

By Kay on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 08:24 pm:

Don't worry, Annie - my Dirt Devil wasn't an 'Ultra Vision'. :)

By Texannie on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 08:50 pm:

sure...try to make me feel better....snif, •••..cough, hack..dust........

By Kay on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 09:28 pm:

:)

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 09:40 pm:

Annie, not to stress you out, but mine was an Ultra Vision. I bought it, used it for less than a year, with one short haired dog, then moved on post (no carpeting at all. Fast forward a year, the vacuum has only been used a few times, to clean the cars and stuff. I move out, change belts and filters, and find that the vacuum will not work, unless I'm using the hose attachment, and even then it was barely sucking up anything! We finally broke down and bought a new one. When we walked in the store and the salesperson asked us what we were looking for Nate said "ANYTHING but a Dirt Devil!!" Again, I don't tell you this to stress you out, but you may want to consider exchanging it if possible!! :( Sorry!! (BTW, my new one is a Bissel, not Hoover, but is pretty good so far!)

By Texannie on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 11:08 pm:

Crystal, I did read in all the reviews that it didn't work well on non carpet floors.
hmmmmmmmmmm...will see how it works tomorrow, I got it at WalMart and I can return it if I don't like it.

btw..••• is a bad word????

By Texannie on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 11:10 pm:

this is hysterical. I am trying to type s*o*b as in CRY, but it keeps getting blacked out!

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 11:29 pm:

LOL, isn't that funny?? S.O.B. should be blacked instead! Anyway, I never used it on my hard floors... I hate the noise of a vacuum!!

By Texannie on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 12:03 am:

crossing my fingers that this one works! I have had so many Oreck, Hoover....

the computer just has a dirty mind! ;)

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 07:42 am:

OK......LOL........

Recently Pam and I went over the profanity list and she made some changes to it. I guess it's working TOO well now! I have emailed her about it, though it may take a few days for her to get to it.

My vacuum cleaner died a few weeks ago too. I was using one my mom had given me - a Dirt Devil, or something like that. I didn't like it that much, but it worked better than the Kirby I spent a FORTUNE on around 18 years ago (which I cannot bring myself to throw out simply because of how much it cost!)

I went to Wal Mart and got a Bissell. It's bagless and this is the first of that kind I've ever used. I was worried that the Bissell wouldn't be good - I don't know anyone personally who uses one. But after the first pass around the house, I was shocked - and impressed - by the amount of stuff it had picked up. Which says a lot about the piece-of-trash one I had been using!

By Mommierenee on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 11:27 am:

yesss, whispertone, that's the one we got at the thrift store. I know they're expensive if they're new, but ours was under 20 dollars. You can tell it was probably used by a grandma or something, it's in great shape!

By Texannie on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 11:53 am:

praying this stupid vacuum is good!!!

wonder what other normal words are "bad"??? LOL

By Sue3 on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 11:58 am:

My died a couple of weeks ago also.I was using a shark and I could find no one who sold parts and the phone # to the factory was ALWAYS busy!
So I went to sears and bought a canister vacuum.
I love it!
All the attachments are stored neatly inside the canister,it was a little more expensive($180 used model,it was $320) but I bought it anyway and the extended warranty also.
Good luck.I use my vacuum a lot and couldn`t be with out for a long time.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 12:19 pm:

Kirby! That was the one we had from grandmother. I hate it when you can't think of a name! We threw it away after being frustrated with its lack of suction. Actually we put it on the curb with a free sign and someone took it (so someone else is probably frustrated with it LOL)

By Texannie on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 12:53 pm:

Well, this sucker is louder than all get out, but it's really sucking things up!! I am rather grossed out at the moment!! If it has to work this hard all the time, maybe that's why they die young. ;)

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 07:32 pm:

Just an update about the profanity list - I spoke with Pam today. We are leaving s o b on the list - she said we can always use cry or weep instead of s o b. The reason behind the profanity list is twofold and simple - a) we are a parenting board and we want the posts to be *clean*, right? And b) We DEFINITELY don't want to be googled by porn seeking lurkers, and the like.....

So ladies, can everyone live without s o b being accepted by the software? It really *doesn't* have a dirty mind! ROFL

By Karen~moderator on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 08:49 am:

bumping for anyone who was wondering about the s o b...........LOL

By Texannie on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 02:02 pm:

ROFL!!!
