What have I gotten myself into?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2004: What have I gotten myself into?

I am probably in over my head. We have a 6 month old son and 5 month old beagle puppy. The two of them are hard enough to handle as it is. Well, yesterday, my friend Jenny (who works at a vets office) practically begged me to "just come look at this husky" that they were trying to adopt out. She was going to be put asleep in a few days. Before I know it, I am driving home with a 2 year old female husky. She is beautiful... and I love her already, but what was I thinking!!!
I am such a softie! We have a stray cat that hangs around too... we must be running a zoo!

Your beautiful husky will be HUGE before you know it!!! They're friendly, though. If you raise them with children. I had a husky & she was SO big & such a big baby!!!

Aaawww... We had a husky/wolf hybrid when we lived in Panama. She lives in Michigan with my brother now. He's got over an acre right next to my mom who also has over an acre, in front of a field that hasn't been used to grow anything for over 10 years, so it's become very wooded. Every now and then she gets out of the fence or off her chain and will dissapear for about 4-5 hours. She's usually off chasing rabbits or deer, or playing in the swamp behind their houses! lol Bryan (my brother) will call me every other month or so and threaten to ship her to me. We just don't have the room for her (we're on 1/10 of an acre). That 1/4 wolf in her put quite a wild streak in that dog! I always said if a dog could be ADHD, it would be her.

Now that I've totally scared you (rofl!), huskys are VERY smart dogs. If she's 2yo, she's gotten most of her puppy stages out by now and should be settling down. Make sure you keep her brushed, especially when she's going through her twice yearly shedding stages (usually in September and May, although they shed year round, just not as much--you'll see :) ). They really are great dogs. Ours treated the boys (who were 1 and 3 when we got her) like her siblings. They're very much a pack animal and need to be around other pets and people. I think you're really going to enjoy her. Ours was named Nikita. What's yours named? Congrats on the newest family member and post a pic! :)

Her name is Berkley... she gets along well with Waylon (my beagle) he just wears her out with all his playing. And my son loves her, he laughs every time he sees her, so that makes it all worth it :)

If you love animals, you will enjoy it. Have fun with your newest family member.

Have so much fun with her. They are beautiful dogs and the worst stages are probably over if she's already 2. Good Luck

She should be done growing and ready to calm down at this point. Just be sure to socialize her well. I agree, post pics!

Awwwww.... I have a Husky. I just have to warn you, get a good vacuum. They shed ALL year round and there is nooooo end. I love my dog and I think they are one of the best breeds but next time around i'll opt for a dog that sheds a lot less. :) Good Luck, is she a howler??? I love the husky howl.

Melissa, ours would "talk" like Chewbaka (sp) from Star Wars. It was so cute! We'd even call her Chewy when she did it. :) I remember vacuuming 2 or 3 times a day when she was going through her twice yearly shed (is that a wolf thing or a husky thing?) and at least once a day the rest of the time. It was so funny when we moved into our house in Maryland after she'd been gone for a year. We were STILL finding her hair in the furniture! She really was a great dog. The kids still miss her and love visiting her when we visit my family. Oh, and our new puppy doesn't shed. It's great, but we do have to have him groomed every 3 months.

I have been taking a few pictures, and will post them soon :)
And I have already seen the shedding in action...every thing I own is covered in fur!
