Treadmill?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2008: Treadmill?
By Cat on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 12:12 pm:

Does anyone have a treadmill they'd recommend or not recommend? I'm going to take up running and would love the convenience of doing it anytime in my home rather than going to the rec center or clubhouse. I refuse to run on our unplowed streets--I don't think it's safe (hidden ice, cars, narrow streets, sidewalks are all covered at the moment, etc). I'd love to find a nice used on, but don't know if I really want one someone else is dumping--of course they're probably dumping it because it never got used! lol So reviews? Anyone? :)

I've had 3 used treadmills and loved every one of them! I refuse to pay the new price for one. :) I have had 2 Lifestylers and loved them both. The one I currently have folds up...my favorite feature. I highly recommend the fold-up option as well as auto-incline. This particular one does not have running programs, but I can do that myself so I don't mind it too much.

Sorry...TWO used treadmills was what I meant to say.

I would get a top of the line one, and check epinions. You don't want the belt to skip when you are running. You might find a good one on craigslist, we got a great bowflex on it.

Ditto the folding and the auto incline. Also built in heart rate monitor is fun. We have one from Sears that we got on sale 6 years ago, a Proforma and we love it.

However, I'm finding that I love a row machine the best of all the cardio choices. When it's time to add to our collection (we have a Nordic Trac, an elliptical, a treadmill and a healthrider for cardio - in addition to other resistance machines) I will get a row machine.

Mine is Proform and I love it. It folds up & has an incline. You can program it to walk inclines, run, etc. It can be connected online to several fitness levels.

We have a NorticTrack E3500 that my dh probably spent too much $ on. I wasn't there when he bought it. We did need a good, big one that could handle my big dh running on it.

Anyway, it's a great treadmill. We love it. He have had it for maybe 4 years now and never had any trouble with it (*knock on wood*)

It does the incline, and folds up. I think you can do something online with it but I have no idea how.

Ame, where do have room for all that, in your house? I think we'd be pushing it just to find room for a treadmill!

By Conni on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 08:23 am:

I have a used ProForm. It was about 3 yrs old when I paid $250 for it. And I have had it now for about 4 yrs. Still works perfectly.

I was looking at the new ones that were $700-on up. I was sooo glad to find this one for $250!!! It was a little old ladies treadmill and she rarely used it, so still like brand new. :)

By Reds9298 on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 08:57 am:

Ours have never been over $250 used. Both that we bought were just like you said Cat, practically brand new that people were getting rid of because they never used them. I like to let someone else pay $1000 for one and then I get the benefits. :)

We also have a Bowflex (bought new) and we did have a Proform Elliptical from Sears that was a hunk of junk. It never worked well, had service calls, ended up getting rid of it.

Dawn- all of our exercise equipment is in our office/craft/workout room! :) It's a room that serves many purposes, LOL. DH doesn't workout at home anymore, but I do, so between the scrapbook area and the equipment, DH's "football" room is turning into mine! LOL

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 03:26 pm:

We don't have an office/craft/workout room! After Sarah moves out, then we will! LOL! Right now, all of our rooms are being used. It's only a 1600 sq ft house.

Although, the basement would probably work, but there's so much stuff we have yet, from when Gary's dad died. Argh.

Reds, which Lifestyler do you have? There's an ad on Craigslist for a 550 space saver one for $100. It says it's in good condition but no pic, so I know practically nothing about it.

By Amecmom on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 06:44 pm:

Our two car garage is our gym. The house we are building will actually have a real gym inside (so I don't freeze my you-know-what off in the winter). Can't wait for that ...
I think the Elliptical we have is a NordicTrac, too.
We also have an incline bench, a leg curl, a lats pull down a rack with a barbell and a Bowflex.
Sadly, we don't use it as much as we should ...

I have a friend who works at a gym. In her last house they had a special built workout room, mirrors on one wall, special floor, etc. It was way cool!

By Cat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 09:01 pm:

Okay, I found out it doesn't have an automatic incline, but can be adjusted to 3 different heights. I think I'll pass and keep looking. I'd really like a nice one, even if I have to pay a little more.

By Reds9298 on Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 08:00 am:

Ours is the Lifestyler Expanse 850. It's wonderful! It's roomier than our last one which I really like. Definitely auto incline or I would pass. Our last one did not have auto incline, and once I started using incline more we started looking for a new one. Good luck! There are plenty to be had. We've always easily found one within a couple of weeks.

I found a Proform on the BX site for $389 that looks nice. Dh thinks we should go look at the BX this weekend to see what they have in stock and actually try them out. Maybe I'll be getting a new one this weekend! If we have to order if from their site it will probably take 3-4 weeks to get here. Either way, I guess I could wait if I have to. At least new would have a full warranty. :)

Just and update. I ordered a Proform Crosswalk from Sears. We'll pick it up later this week. I wanted to pick it up today but I haven't gotten my email saying I can and it's too late now (they close at 6 and it's a good 45 minute drive--the only local store that had one in stock). So by this weekend I'll be movin' and grovin'! lol

Dawn - I'm with you. My home is even smaller- 920 squ. feet. It's a three bedroom/one bath ranch. All of our rooms are occupied as well. Everything we store in the basement has to be in Rubbermaid totes because we get water in the basement in the Spring. We have a sump pump, but the floor still gets wet. I also SO relate about accumulating more stuff after the death of parents and breaking up THEIR homes.

In the eight years between when our birth kids left home and our "second family" (our adopted kids) moved in, we did have two spare bedrooms. My DH had all of his military memorobilia in one. I had all of my books and crafts in the other. I had a Nordic Track treadmill in there that I paid a LOT for. I ended up hanging clothes on it! LOL! I think that's why you see so many for sale, or at the curb in front of people's homes. I, too, thought that I could walk regardless of weather, etc. We also have a family membership to the YMCA, which is on my way home from work. I guess I am just not that motivated. LOL!
