Totally addicted to Freecycle

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2005: Totally addicted to Freecycle

I swear, Im like an addict now that I found Freecycle. I know this has been discussed before. But, I find myself checking the site all day long. Things move quickly on there. I do give away more then anything. We have picked up a few things.
Anybody else addicted to Freecycle?

What is it???

By Mommyof4 on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 04:29 pm:

People will list things that they have that they want to give away OR you can post a request for something that you would like to have. No money exchanges hands and the idea is to keep things out of the landfills.... One man's junk is another man's treasure.

I recently got a brown leather coat through our local freecycle list. It's fur-lined, and only missing a tie belt, but I'm using it for really cold soccer-watching, and it fits like a dream. It's one of the few coats I have in which the arms are not too long.

I am totally addicted to Freecycle!!!:) I have given away so much stuff. As a matter of fact, I listed a couple of items just a few minutes ago. I have only taken a couple of things because I am trying to cut down on the clutter in my house. I do check it every time I get on the computer just in case there is something on there too good to pass up. Those things go so quickly though.

what is the site, and does it work, here in B.C ? sounds like something I would like to get involved with.

By Jackie on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:01 pm:

Well Im not sure what cities have it. Its a yahoo group. I found it under recycle groups in the yahoo groups. I know alot of the major cities have them. Just go to yahoogroups, and look around.

Thanks for the info. I just joined in the 2 closest towns to me. I always have tons of stuff I'd like to give away!

By Jelygu on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 09:35 pm:

I constantly check the site, but if I happen to want something, its usually gone before I try to get it.
I think it is interesting to see what people will ask for, and what people will take! I haven't seen a whole lot I would want, but someone was giving away patio furniture the other day, I was just too late. Darn!

I run my group here in VACAVILLE, CALIFORNIA. I love it! It's helped so many people and kept so many of my things from ending up in the trash or at Good Will where they charge too much for them (in my opinion) and the people who really need them can't afford them anyway.

YEAH FREECYCLE!

O.K. I must be a dummy because I did sign up for Freecycle in my area, but I can't find out how to see a listing of what people have. What am I doing wrong.

By Jtsmom on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 03:25 pm:

Another question. If I have something that I would like to give away, do they have to come to my house to get it, or how does that work. By the way, I found out how to get a listing of items.

By Janet on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 03:25 pm:

I thought it was an exercise machine! LOL There's one in my area, but I haven't signed up. I wish I could just look and see, without signing up. Sounds like a good idea. Kind of like the "Good Neighbors" section of our local paper. :)

By Jackie on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 03:39 pm:

They can come to your house, or you can arrange a pick-up/drop off place. When I first started givng stuff away, I always said "Public drop off only"..So Id meet people at parking lots of stores, or gas station. Now that im more comfortable, I let them come here. But, I leave everything outside in a bag with their name on it.

Janet-you can sign up, it doesnt cost anything, you can look at the site and if its not something youd like to do, then just unsub yourself, no harm done.

By Afox2004 on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 04:01 pm:

The reason that we have you sign up is so that you are protected more. If anyone could just look and answer, they'd have access to your private information. We could not control spammers or the like. It's nothing more than that. As an Administrator, I have intercepted a lot of people spamming peoples personal email boxes and one person even tried to spread a virus. We were able to eliminate him before it became a problem.

I've joined but I've had issues with being "beat to the punch"! I swear I check my email every 10 minutes and I'm STILL never the first to respond!!

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 09:12 pm:

Our group asks you to not just pick the first to respond, but give everyone a chance to respond and then choose a person. Not everyone follows that, but I just gave a digital camera/web cam away, and I went through my responses before deciding. Our local group was on the news, pretty cool!

By Juli4 on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 10:22 pm:

they usually don't go with the first to respond becasue we do the same thing with checking our mail and such. They first go with the person with the most interesting or biggest ••• story. That is just my experience. Or if they can't get rid of it then anyone willing to come pick it up.

By Jackie on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 - 07:27 am:

Ive only found Freecycle around this past Thanksgiving. I was giving away a ton of my sons clothes as we are done having kids. Well of course I got tons of responses. I "thought" you were suppose to take the first response. THen I would notice the same people always wanting the clothes, Granted Im sure there are moms out there who really do need winter boy clothes..After awhile I started sorting through the responses. I hated the ones that said "I want them , I can pick up today".. Not even asking "are these still available?"...I started giving people the clothes when they were nice in their e-mails,some ladies wanted them for their grandchildren who they took care of.
If there is something I want, I try to make my e-mail nice like saying "Is this "item" still available. My 5 yr old daughter would really love this"...etc.. I think it pays to me nice on freecycle and not greedy.

By Mrsheidi on Tuesday, January 4, 2005 - 09:45 am:

WOW! Good to know! I usually just type a fast response since this one lady told me that 10 other people responded earlier than me. Very good to know...thanks!
