Moms View Message Board: Let's Get Fit! (Weight Loss Support Group): Crystal
By Cat on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - 09:03 am:

Have you gotten your WW books yet? I got mine last night. According to their chart I can have 22 points a day (plus the 35 flex points every week). When I drop below 150 I'll go to 20 points a day. So for now I'll strive for around 21 a day and use my 35 flex as a cushion, so to speak. I did pick up some WW muffins at the commissary the other day that are 3 points each. I haven't tried them yet, though. I'll have to check out what other foods the commissary has (probably not much--you know how that works). My books came with a 5 or 6 sheet paper explaining the program. It says about a 2lb loss each weeks is reasonable with a little more the first couple weeks or so because of water weight loss. I *know* I'll loose water weight this week since it's that time of month! lol If I can stick to this and do about 3 nights a week of karate I'm thinking I'll be where I want to be by June/July. I'll keep you accountable if you'll keep me. :)

By Cat on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - 01:31 pm:

OOOHHH!!! I just went down to get a frozen meal for lunch. I bought about 4 at the commissary last weekend. They're WW meals! They're called Smart Ones. I didn't realize that's what they were. Our commissary had a whole section of them in the freezers. Too cool! That makes counting points SO much easier! lol

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - 05:14 pm:

I still have not, but they were shipped Monday, I believe. I would be worried, but the seller has a top rating and was upfront about an issue with the person who does her shipping, so I'm being patient. I do have a few SmartOnes meals in my freezer, I've been calorie counting until I get my WW, and it's WAY tough. I've been trying to stay at or below 1000 calories, which is VERY restrictive, but so far I've been pretty successful with it. I am looking forward to starting WW, and would love to have a "partner"!! I did really well at the gym Monday night, I did 20 mins (2miles) on the elliptical, ran 1 mile (in 10:31, very good for me!), another mile on the elliptical, and ran another mile (10:11). I felt amazing!!!

By Brandy on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - 09:33 pm:

Good job you two ... = ) yes 1000 cals is very restrictive that's probably why your going nuts lol you need more food silly = ) especially if you are excercising = ) have a great night and great day tomorrow = )

By Cat on Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 11:12 am:

Great job, Crystal!!! So far the counting points isn't too bad. One egg, a small banana and a cup of milk is 5 points. Pretty good breakfast! Veggies seem to be freebies so salads are good. You just have to watch the dressing. Last night I had a chicken breast from KFC without the skin (3pts) and a salad with just a touch of light Italian dressing (about 1 point) so I was below my 22 points yesterday. :) We can do this! I may switch to the core program after a while. Then I get to eat anything on the approved list without having to count the points. I just have to adjust things a bit. I've already got 4 hours of karate in this week and will probably get about 1/2 hour or so at the potluck tonight (doing different demos and such). Like I said, the next two weeks are going to be challenging without karate class. I'll have to do some other stuff.

I agree with Brandy--1000 calories is VERY restrictive. I'd probably go to 1200 at least, even at your weight. Throw some weight training in there, too. You'll turn fat to muscle so you won't see a loss right away, but muscle burns more calories than fat. That's probably why I've maintained where I am with eating whatever I want! lol I can really pig out and not gain too much, but if I'm not exercising I really plump up! rofl I know I have to be careful, though. My dad was over 250lbs and both my brothers are between 250-300. Granted they're both 6' tall, but still. I have/had a lot of overweight people in my family. I do weigh a little more than my mom (who's the same height I am) but I have a LOT more muscle than she does and she's got lots of health problems, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol which she's on a special diet for (she has to count carbs). I'm hoping to avoid some of the problems she's got (which are all, unfortunately hereditary).

Let me know when you get your books, Crystal. If you want to know any point values before then, let me know that, too. :)

By Crystal915 on Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 08:52 pm:

I got my books tonight, I'm very excited. I'm splurging on thin crust pizza and boneless wings tonight, because I was too busy to eat anything today, the only calories I had were coffee and a bottle of gatorade. I think I will switch to the Core program after I hit my goal weight, to maintain.
Last night's workout wasn't as good as I would have liked, I did 2 miles on the elliptical, and ran a mile, but I *did* cut my mile down to 9:28!! That's the best I've ever run, but it dam near killed me! Really, the problem was the warm temp in the cardio room, it was unusually hot when I walked in.
How did you do today??

By Cat on Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 11:26 pm:

Yeah, you got them! :) Today was good. I stayed right at 22 points. I was a bit concerned with the potluck, but it ended up I didn't have time to eat there anyway! lol I was in 4 different demos in the program and they stuck me in another at the last minute, so I stayed very busy. I broke four bricks!!! :) My hand is quite bruised, though. I think I broke a blood vessel for each brick I broke. It was a lot of fun. I took a crockpot FULL of sloppy joe mix and only brought 2 cups of it home, so that was a hit! I took cookies, too that I'd made this afternoon. It KILLED me not to eat any of the dough! I'd told one of our kids (19yo assistant instructor) I'd make him cookies since a couple little kids brought him some the other night at class and the class ended up eating them all! lol I did good, though. :) No official working out today, but I did enough in the demo I think I'm good. :) I'm not sure what I'll do tomorrow, but I'll have a 16mo, a 7yo and a 10yo to keep up with. I bet we end up making cookies again. We're supposed to get snow tomorrow night so maybe I'll shovel. :)

Great job on working out!!! AWESOME job on the mile! I HATE running. I know it's good for me, but I've never really liked it. I need to work on that (the attitude).

Gotta go to bed now. Tired girl... :)

By Crystal915 on Friday, December 21, 2007 - 03:23 am:

Wow, that's awesome!!! Karate always amazes me, it's not something I would try, but I always find it so neat to see. Excellent job not eating the dough, I know that is TOUGH!! I had bought some fake bake dough to have the kids make cookies, and I had a binge night a couple weekends ago where I ate a few chunks. It's awesome that you kept to your points, I'm not sure if I did since I didn't get my stuff until tonight. I'll let you know tomorrow!!
We're supposed to get snow Saturday, and I have to meet the kids in KC at 0600 Sunday morning, so I can say goodbye before they fly to FL. Lucky dogs, they are taking swimsuits!!! I like shoveling snow, so I might do that, but I usually just go to the gym M,W, and F. Do you have any suggestions for weight training? I always feel lost in the weight room, and just go up to cardio. (BTW, I detest running, but I've always WANTED to be good at it. Oddly enough, I can only run well indoors!)

By Cat on Friday, December 21, 2007 - 08:17 am:

Don't knock karate until you try it! I didn't join because I wanted to advance in belt levels or kick major booty. I joined because I needed to work out and since I was there with the kids anyway I might as well do it (since I didn't have any other time to fit anything in!). Now I love it! I'm an Advance II Brown belt and will test for my Senior III next spring and then my Black in June or July of 2009 (we have to test at seminar and that's only once a year--I'd be eligible after wearing Senior III for 6 months). The kids are already Jr Black Belts! I still outrank them because I'm the mom. lol If you lived closer I'd take you to class with me on buddy night. We do that once or twice a month. It's not easy! The first month I tested (and it wasn't even for the next belt, just a stripe on my belt!) I almost cried. Seriously. It's much easier now, but still not easy.

I ended up eating leftover KFC last night, and it was 11 points (1 thigh and 1 leg). That put me at 22pts yesterday. I'd had a 5pt breakfast and a 6pt lunch. I skipped snacks because I knew the potluck was coming. Good thing because dinner ended up using all my leftover points! So far I haven't used any flex pts this week, but we're having friends over tomorrow night for burgers so I may end up using them then. I'll make sure we have a big salad to go with them and I'll eat a small one, maybe without the bun. Have you looked at bread in the pts book??? It's insane!

For weight training--remember this is my totally unprofessional opinion, but start with the core. Train with machines that work the ab and back muscles. You can also do sit ups and push ups. Use your body weight! People think push ups are only for the arms. NOT! Try doing planks--that's where you're in the up position for a pushup and you just stay there for 30 seconds or so. You'll feel it in your abs! Also, lay on your back on the floor and lift your head and shoulders up a few inches and then your legs up, keeping them straight until your feet are about 6 inches off the floor. You can either stay in that position or do leg lifts--keeping your legs straight just lift them until they're straight up and then put them back down but DON'T let them touch the floor until you're done with your reps (I'd start with 6-10). It helps to put your hands under your butt, palms down making a triangle with your fingers and thumbs. Of course the leg and arm machines will work your legs and arms, too. The core's probably most important, imo anyway, though. Then there's squats. If you do them right you'll feel it in your thighs a day or so later. :) Can you hula-hoop? That's great for abs and obliques. Jumping rope is a great cardio workout if you can't get to the gym and the equipment is cheap! Listen to me--I guess I can find lots to do these next two weeks without karate! lol

Let me know how you're doing today. I just enjoyed my 5pt breakfast of old fashioned oatmeal with unsweetened applesauce, cinnamon and nutmeg, a sprinkle of Splenda and a cup of milk. Yummy! :)

By Cat on Saturday, December 22, 2007 - 09:43 am:

Yesterday I stuck right at about 21 or 22 points. You'd be SO proud of me! We made cookies (the 7yo daycare girl and I) yesterday morning. Double batch, per her request. I didn't eat ANY dough or any cookies so far! I did have one piece of a peanut butter treat a daycare mom brought me, but ONLY one and I'm actually sending half of what she gave me to my mom (she brought a LOT!) so it won't get wasted here. I haven't stepped on the scales yet this morning, but since starting Wednesday they have dropped each day so far. :) I'll do a weekly weigh in with totals instead of boring you with daily. I'm keeping track for myself, though. I didn't get any exercise in yesterday. I'm really sore from all the karate earlier this week. What I really need is a good long soak or a full body massage! lol Hey, if I lay on the floor the dogs will walk on me--would that work, ya think??? :)

Hopefully I can do well today. Friends are coming over tonight. I'm going to put the peanut butter treat out to share, and the cookies. I gave a few dozen away yesterday to the daycare families but there's still a few dozen left. Maybe I'll get a tin and send some home tonight with our friends! They have a 1yo and a 5yo, plus dad's a big kid, so they'll get eaten at their house. lol

Let me know how you're doing, Crystal! My WW buddy is leaving me hanging here. :)

By Cat on Monday, December 24, 2007 - 11:19 am:

Alright, Crystal. Am I going to have to send out a search party? Have you gone off the wagon already??? *g* I'm still doing well and the scale is being kind! I think Saturday I used all 22 points for the day and probably most of my flex points for the week, but that's okay. I stayed right around 21 or 22 yesterday. Today won't be too bad because it's a "normal" day. Of course with Christmas dinner tomorrow I'll have to be careful. Dh mentioned he'd like to loose about 20lbs, but there's no way he can do the point system. When he has steak he wants the full pounder! lol We'll see what I can do with him. He's not at all fat--he'd just like to slim down a bit. I told him he couldn't do the points because then he'd loose twice as fast and me and I'd have to hurt him. *eg*

I hope you're doing well. Give me an update!

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 - 10:41 pm:

Sorry Cat, I was in KC for the weekend, so minimal time at the computer, and I missed this post. I'm totally proud of you, you are kicking butt!!!!! WTG on keeping the goodies in check, that's the hardest part about this time of year! Are we going to weigh in on any particular day? Let me know!!

I didn't start counting points until today, and I went over. :( I'm allotted 20, and used 26. :( I guess I can count them as flex points, and I will be at the gym every evening this week, so I'm pretty much earning them back, but I am still upset with myself. I am going to have to keep better track, and carry my books with me. I've been really slow starting off here, so I could use all the encouragement you've got!! I appreciate the weight training/core tips, and Karate definitely sounds interesting, although I can't imagine myself doing it.

You are so right about men, my boyf is on the point system, and was previously counting calories with me. I would eat less calories, work out way more (he pretty much never works out), and he'd lose the weight. He's got about 30 lbs left to lose (he's 6'4, about 225), after losing 15 already. I lost 3 lbs, which came right back.

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 - 10:42 pm:

Oh yeah, I picked up the WW giant fudge bars at the commissary, they are amazing!! They fixed my chocolate craving, and tasted really good!! Can you email me the sheet that came with your WW books? Mine were supposed to have starter instructions, but didn't, I'm rather disappointed with the transaction. Of course, I use eBay a lot, and I have only had a few less than perfect transactions, so it's still rating better than most stores. Don't get me started on poor service, I was ready to kill the punks in Starbucks last night!!

By Cat on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - 09:10 am:

Well don't be so proud of me because I totally blew it yesterday! lol With the pie and ham, and fudge and ham, and cookie brittle and ham... I think you get the picture.

I was going to weigh in today since I started one week ago, but I'm going to put it off until tomorrow to try and redeem myself a little. I'm still down from my starting weight--just up from what I was the day BEFORE yesterday.

I saw those giant fudge bars at Safeway the other day and almost got them! I figured I'd check the commissary first, though. They're SO much cheaper on so many things.

If I can figure out my scanner I'll email you those pages. If not I can either fax them or copy them and mail them to you. I'm sorry your's didn't have what it was supposed to. We've gotten screwed a few times on eBay, too. Once was over a $1.45 football card the guy never sent us! Dh disputed it and we got our money back. The money wasn't the issue, though, as I'm sure you know. I was thrilled the other day with one transaction, though. I'd order Christmas ornaments for the kids--a guitar for Randy and Transformers for Robin. I placed the order on the 19th at an eBay Express store and we got them Christmas Eve!!! I didn't expect them, but was so very happy they got here in time for Christmas. The kids loved them and we got to put them on the tree. Too cool! :)

Have a great day today. Don't beat yourself up over going over points yesterday. Good grief, I went so far over I wouldn't even know how high I was. :( But today's a new day. I'm off to have breakfast. I found a cereal in the points book that if a freebie (All Bran) so I add a banana and milk and get away with a 2-3 point breakfast (depending on the size of the banana and how much milk I need). Not too bad! I figure a salad for lunch, maybe with a little cheese and ham will be about 4-6 points (found a freebie dressing I like, Salad Spritzer, Italian). Then I'll try to be good at dinner--leftover ham and some steamed broccoli and veggies or something. That will leave me some snacking room during the afternoon or evening. That's when I have the most trouble.

Good luck and I'll weigh in tomorrow. I'm still debating on whether or not to just to total lost or starting weight, current weight and goal. What do you think? What will YOU most likely do??? Of course, yours is much lower than mine, but that's okay. Have a great day!

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - 08:50 pm:

Aww, the holidays are so hard for dieting!! I've pretty much cheated today, I literally slept ALL day, I woke up sick and called out of work, didn't get up until 1800, which is normally when I get off work!! So, I only have 7 points so far, and 3 were from a REALLY late night snack of carrots and dressing.

That's really cool about the ornaments, I have really had some great experiences on eBay, so I'm generally a big fan.

I hadn't really thought about the weigh in too much, but I'll probably do starting weight, current, and goal, just because gaining 5 lbs, then losing 6 skews the whole week. It keeps me more honest, but you are welcome to do what you are comfortable with. Hope you have a great evening!!!

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - 09:55 pm:

Cat,
I forgot, the reason the instructions weren't in my package is because she emailed them!! LOL, glad I didn't give negative feedback! So, according to a site I found this week, I get 20 points for being under 150lbs. According to the instructions I get 21, based off the information I answered. How are you calculating your points?

By Cat on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - 10:10 pm:

I'm calculating how many I get by the chart of weights. I'm still over 150 (hopefully not for too much longer! lol) so I get 22 points a day. I was really good today and I'm sitting at between 12-16 points today, depending on how much is in the ham (I can't really find what we have in my book). I probably should have something else, but I was SO bad yesterday, I guess I want to make up for it. I had lots of salad and veggies today, along with a WW 1 point lemon cake. Yum! lol I sat down to eat it this afternoon and dh asked what I was eating. I told him "a 1 point lemon cake". He asked from where, because no one makes a 1 point cake! I told him WW and he said, "Oh", like *I don't want one of THOSE* oh's. lol He wanted pizza for dinner and I told him that was fine but we'd have to go buy stuff for salad because I'd finished it for lunch. He asked if I wouldn't eat pizza and I said I could have one slice. He said, "That's ALL???" rofl He's a 3-4 slice kind of guy.

I'll weigh in tomorrow morning and post my starting weight, current weight and current goal. I may change my goal when I get closer to it. I haven't been under 139 in YEARS so we'll see what happens and what I look like/how I feel then. Oh, PLEASE, let the scales be kind in the morning! lol

By Crystal915 on Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 03:19 am:

Ok, I checked the book for 0 point cereals, and Fiber One was listed, so was All Bran, but it must be the extra fiber kind, and a few other all fiber cereals that did not sound yummy. Cereal is one of my favorite foods, but at least my corn flakes are only 2 points!!! I'm doing a search now for 0 point foods, especially snack foods. I'm currently at 16 for today, and I know you aren't supposed to under-eat, but since I went over by 4 or 5 yesterday, I'm trying to make them up.

LOL about your DH, I bet if you had given him one on a plate without mentioning WW, he would have loved it!! John (my boyf) usually eats 4-6 slices when we order pizza. Since we've been trying to lose weight, I'm always going "Do you *really* need 2 more slices?" Some men have no sense about portions!!

I'm going to the gym before work, so I hope the scales are kind to me, too!!

By Crystal915 on Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 08:15 am:

Morning so far...

I had a really yummy 4pt breakfast, it was 3 egg white (1) some shredded sharp cheddar (2), and salsa (0), with 3 slices of crispbread (1). I was a little worried about how the crispbread would taste, but I like it!!

I went to the gym, this workout was tough because my knees and shins started bothering me from the very start. I did 2 miles (20 min) on the elliptical, walked 1 mile (15 min), ran 1 mile (9:47), then did another half mile on the elliptical because I wanted to hit 450 cals. I'm not using activity points, because I figure you are SUPPOSED to work out to lose weight, not eat more because you worked out.

I hope your day goes well, let me know what you are eating for meals, I'm not very good at coming up with low point meals on my own. :)
