Tantrums at Dinner Time

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Tantrums at Dinner Time
By Kiki on Sunday, February 12, 2006 - 06:56 pm:

We solved the issue of Julianna feeding Fluffy at meal times but we have a new dilemma-

Her new thing, she doesn't want to sit in her high chair to eat. She wants to sit on her father's lap and have him feed her. She's 20 months old. If my DH or I put her in the high chair to eat she will throw a fit the entire time. She won't eat. She will throw anything on her tray. She will scream and cry until she vomits (not a pleasant thing to experience while trying to eat dinner).

Her younger sister, Claudia, is 9 months old and sits in a high chair too and eats her dinner without a problem. Julianna is very independent and strong willed. She refers to Claudia as the baby and doesn't like to be called a baby. Should I put her in a booster seat? Help!?

I don't know what to do. My oldest, Gabrielle, age 9, gags and sometimes won't finish her dinner after Julianna gets sick. This is insane. lol

Try the booster, Matthew has been in a booster for awhile now. He eats breakfast and lunch in the booster and sits at the table with us in a chair for dinner. It certainly can't hurt to try the booster and you might even try just putting her in a regular chair.

Try the booster. Natalie has some meals in the booster, but all of her snacks. She likes either one, so I guess we're lucky. She's also almost 20mths. Good luck!!

We had a high chair but never got a lot of use out of it. My lap was the booster seat of choice.

I would go with the booster. My dd refused her high chair at an early age. She also decided when the booster was enough for her. At least you could try it. It would be a compromise.

We did different things. If he wanted to sit on our lap and eat we would let him. We would also turn a lg stew pot upside down in a chair with a towel over it. He liked to sit on that sometimes to eat. We used a booster chair. We also would pull high chair up to table with no tray on it and he could sit in high chair, but eat off table with us...

OH! We also had a Little Tikes Picnic table that I would pull up next to our kitchen table sometimes he loved to sit at that table and his older brothers thought it was fun to eat at it with him. Even tho I am sure there was some weight limit they exceeded. lol ;)

We also just took the tray off of the high chair and pushed it up to the table. DD thought that was too cool.

I pushed the high chair to the table without the tray for dinner last night and she liked it. I hope this works for awhile, if not we we use the booster seat.

She's just so independent. My oldest sat in the high chair until she was 2 1/2.

The picnic table sounds cute! That would be a great alternative for holidays and family gatherings.
Thanks again ladies!
