A Viet Nam Prayer (His)

A VIET NAM PRAYER (HIS)

Dear Lord I'm here in Viet Nam,
So far from those I love.
I'm going into battle, Lord.
I'll need help from above.

What can I say to you, Dear God?
You know the hearts of men,
But after all the fighting's done,
Let me go home again?

Maybe I'm asking for too much.
I'm not the holy type.
I really hate complaining
And I don't like to gripe,

But God, it's so darned lonely here.
Sure my buddies are all around,
But we're afraid of snipers, Lord,
So we can't make a sound.

The jungle's hot and sticky.
The bugs are even worse,
And when I think of Charlie, God,
I feel like I've been cursed.

I miss my girl, my parents too.
Their letters aren't enough.
I want to go back home to them.
I guess I'm not so tough.

And so before I close my eyes
And dream of things back home,
I need to get this off my chest,
Then I won't feel so alone

I've told you all my fears and gripes.
I've one more thing to say.
If You see fit to do so, Lord,
Let me live one more day,

And every day I'll ask the same
Until this war is through.
And then go home and live in peace,
But it's all up to You.
