Moving a car?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2007: Moving a car?

Good news- Scott got the job in Colorado!!! Only thing is that they want him to start on the 29th of this month! And, I don't forsee a cross-country trip with a 2 year old, stopping every 3 hours, as much fun.

Have any of you shipped a vehicle cross country before, or know someone who has?

Every 3 hours? I think we stopped far oftener than that, when we crossed South Dakota! LOL! I have no advice for you, but probably flying would be easier.

We are the family of cross county trips, we moved to cinci when the kids were 2 months and 2 years, then again, when they were 18 months, 3 and 5.

Our movers did move one car for us though, I guess they might of moved 2 if we asked.

Here are some tips in case you decide to drive.

Buy some stuff now that he won't see till he gets in the car, give him a new toy every couple of hours (or longer if he can stand it). Mine loved any little people he could grab, so we got a tube of animals at walmart and the likes. Also color wonder books are a God send. Give up the idea that the radio belongs to you, buy some great kid music and call it his. If you are singing and laughing with him, he will love it. Also really the less you stop the better. We found that it took 30 minutes or so for them to settle down from stops. So we ate in the car (go drive through) and then planned our stop about 30 minutes after for potty breaks.

We never considered flying an option because we had stuff that we had to move in the car with us.

This last trip to texas my kids were 5,7, and 9, it is a 22 hour trip and we did it with the golden retriver, the cat and the house plants..LOL

I don't know my kids have always been pretty good riders. Well they have been going to NC since they were babies and its a 10 hour drive for us. So obviously you have a lot farther. If this is the first long trip. I agree new things and a dvd player for movies! That is a lifesaver for us. My dd know gets bored and picks on her brother thats are biggest obstacle. We stop the least amount as possible to. Food and gas breaks are potty breaks. Of course if they have to in between we do. But my kids usually don't. If we do stop again we fill up whether we need it or not. The eliminates another stop later.

I have no advice but I'm so happy that Scott got that job and that you will be going back to where you really want to be. I hope selling your current house goes quickly. :)

If you are using a moving company, they can take your car in the moving van. We have done this a few times. We have also had a car shipped ahead. Dh did this because he started working his new job before the rest of us actually moved. I have no idea how much it cost though, because his company paid for it.

We shipped a car from Rhode Island to California. I won't be much help, though, because I don't remember what it cost or even how long it took. I do know I was without a car for a while, though, since it shipped the same day we flew out.

Congratulations on Scotts new job!!

Is his new employer paying for moving? If so, it is not your problem, the mover will handle it. Your problem is locating a reliable, ethical, honest mover. You can also rent trailer type devices that ride behind a truck or car to tow the car.

One important thing - before the movers come, take photos of everything breakable/damageable. This means all glassware, china, etc., and all furniture. This would be a good time to rent a videocam if you don't have one. Do a complete inventory of everything you will be moving. it is worth paying for extra insurance - the standard insurance is a flat amount per pound and not for the value or replacement/repair costs. At the other end, don't pay until you check the condition of every major piece of furniture and take photos of anything damaged. Don't sign anything that says everything is in good condition until you have ascertained that everything is in good condition, and when you sign write in "No sealed boxes have been opened or examined and this statement of receipt in good condition does not apply to items in sealed boxes." If a box rattles and you think something might be broken, photograph the sealed box and each stage of the unpacking, including any broken item. I recall that Consumer Reports had a lengthy article about moving companies several years ago - go to your library and check that out.

Congrats on his new job!
When we moved, I flew with my children (infant and a toddler) while hubby drove the vehicle. A moving co brought all our belongings.
