Scholarships

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2007: Scholarships
By Dawnk777 on Thursday, May 17, 2007 - 12:25 am:

We had scholarship night tonight! (2.5 hours long - lots of clapping!)

Sarah got one scholarship that is only given out to 2 kids in Sheboygan. They were both at her school. They mentioned her activities, that she wants to be a nurse, her love of science and wanting to help people!

She also got one, that she was part of a group of 53, who all got part of a $200,000 pot! Wow! It will really help pay for college!

One of her friends wants to be a doctor and she got a HUGE scholarship! She had to wait until one of the last 2, to get her scholarships. The friend was crying!

We are pleased with what she got. Some of the scholarships are in memory of people who have died. Some of the presenters told stories about the people the scholarships were named after. That made me cry! One was in honor of a girl who graduated from school, in 1978, like I did, but died of cancer in 1998. That was hard, since I could relate to her being my age. In 1998, Sarah would have turned 9 and Emily would have been 6. (unlike me, though, this woman was a sports fanatic and very good at everything she tried. Back in the 70's, Title IX entitling girls to sports, was new, so she wouldn't have been able to play tennis, basketball, or softball, if it hadn't been for Title IX.)

Dawn, that's fantastic!
Our school doesn't have something like this but my dd has joined a group at the local college which will help her look for funds. Thank goodness we took advantage of the FL Prepaid College Program!
Your girls are such an inspiration to my girls. I tell them about your girls, all the time and we believe in Girl Power! You should be very proud :)

I don't know where the scholarships she got last night, fit into this, but there was a group of scholarships, that she only had to fill out one form, and it went to all the groups. There are a lot of people who had no children and accumulated a lot of money, as a result and then developed scholarships to help other people's kids to go to post-high school education! I was floored by their generosity last night!

She filled out so many applications, it's hard to remember the details anymore!

I remember her scrambling to get one all done, before a deadline, that needed financial info, an essay, an activity list, a recommendation letter, and a picture. We can't remember which one that was, though!
