Oh no! How did you break your wrist? How very painful and awkward for you. I hope you won't be incapacitated for long.
Hugs.

Ouch. I would hate having my right hand incapacitated, as well!

OUCH. Is it casted? I can relate - my dominant hand was casted for a couple of months last year. Hope you feel better soon!

Oh no! I have never broken anything. I always wanted a cast as a kid, but I think I have changed my mind now. :) Hope you are better soon.

No, Pam, you don't want a cast. They are itchy and it makes it hard to take a bath. (unless you get one that you can get wet.) Then, when they take the cast off 6 weeks later, your leg (or whatever) will be all gross because your skin kept shedding all those skin cells, but they had nowhere to go! Ewww. I was shedding skin cells for weeks, everytime I took off a pair of socks.

UGH, I paid $100 extra for the one you could get wet. WAY more uncomfortable than a *regular* cast due to the liner they use. And it makes your skin sweat unbelievably! They use this cushiony/rubbery/plastic coated stuff to wrap your arm with before wrapping the fiberglass for the cast, rather than using the sock looking thingie and gauzy/cottony stuff, which is much more comfortable, IMO.

The itching is unbearable - I actually stuck a letter opener down mine to scratch my arm and ripped the skin. The peeling/shedding skin was just gross. And for months afterwards, my skin was soooo sensitive after the cast(s) came off (there were a total of FOUR!)

The worst though, was the stiffness in the joints, and the pain that it caused. I had no clue that would happen and when my last cast came off, I nearly screamed when I tried to move my wrist. My wrist was totally locked when my cast came off and I had 3 months of physical therapy to get my wrist and hand completely mobile/flexible again. And now I have a permanent problem in the outer wrist joint from the position my hand was in while casted. Another problem, another discussion. LOL

Isn't it funny how, when you're a kid, you wished for a broken bone so you could have a cast???? I remember wishing the same thing, Pam. I wanted to walk on crutches and wished for a broken leg!!! I got the opportunity to do the crutches thing when Jeff was a baby after a severe sprain to my ankle, and after 2 days, I was SO over it!

Theresa, I can totally understand your frustration about the hair/makeup/typing - and then it includes washing hair, bathing, shaving, cooking, zipping clothes, tying shoes........I really feel for you!!!!!!

Try to sleep with it elevated on a pillow - that will help with the swelling that often tends to happen at night. Also, you CAN put a really good ice pack on top of the cast if it's a fiberglass cast, and it WILL cool down to the skin and help with swelling too.

How did you break it???? Are you in much pain?

i feel really quite stupid. we live in a very small town so i got a scooter to get around. 100 miles to the gallon. 2 days before my nurse said your gonna' crash that thing and break your neck. i laughed and said you can't fall off a scooter let alone crash it. well, i was running late and had my keys in my pocket. jumped on the scooter and dropped my keys. bent over to pick them up, the scooter went forward, ran into my husband's truck and over i went. i was in my own driveway for pete's sake. lol. anyway got up checked my range of motion on wrist and knee, everything looked good and went on my way. went for a bike ride that nite, it hurt but not too bad. next morning i couldn't wash my hair with my right arm. in for an xray i went and sure enough it was broke.
got into see a hand specialist a week later, and now i'm the proud owner of a $1 million, gajillion dollar screw. it's about one and ahalf inches long. lovely.
pain is there when i over use it. i don't sit well. so this has been very difficult. one more month in this yucky thing and then hopefully life get's back to normal. sorry this is so long the vicadin kicked in :)
