Help picking out colors

house

We are getting ready to paint the trim and soffits of our house and probably the shutters and front door as well. We need CURB APPEAL to we can get this puppy sold! What ideas do you have for colors? Our brick is a light tan with the very slightest pink undertones, but still much much light tan. The mortar is greyish. We were thinking of either dark forest green door/shutters with a much lighter green trim in the same color family or charcoal door/shutters with light grey trim. However, we are open to any suggestions and we aren't good at this sort of thing.

I've always been a fan of green so my vote between the two is green. However, I also think a dark burgundy color for the door might look nice as well.

Pam, find me a job (teaching) and DH a job ( anything will do) and we'll buy your house! I love the big tree in the front yard. Oh, once you find us jobs you'll have to help us out with immigration :)

I think something in the burgundy family would help bring out the pink undertones in the brick, which IMO would be very pretty. I like forest green but not light green for shutters against brick. Is your door painted or natural wood? If it is natural wood, then a lot of people like that natural look. I also like the way it looks right now. You could just give it a fresh coat of paint in the same color and save yourself a lot of extra work. It looks lovely.

Our house in Texas had a pink undertone to the brick, and we had a burgundy trim and shutters. It looked great. I also like the green. For some reason I am not a fan of the color grey on a house. I also don't think it would look as nice with the tan brick.

Pam are the shutters and the door painted or stained? If they are stained, I'd leave them alone. I like them. They have a very elegant, rich, warm look.

Dawn's House

It's a little dark, but you can sort of see the colors. Our brick is tannish and the contrast is sort of a terra cotta color. Over the weekend, we'll try to get a brighter picture. I know we have daylight pictures of the house, but I'm not finding them right now.

back door
Not the whole house, but you can see the trim, the door colors, and the brick.

My vote is for cranberry. I think burgundy would be too dull with the brick.

Also....WHAT'S WITH THE SNOW??? Don't you live in Louisiana??

By Bobbie~moderatr on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 10:13 am:

The snow is at Dawns.. LOL Not Pams...

Pam I am with those above.. Is that wood or paint on the door and shutters???

That's my house on 1-22-2005! LOL! It was right after a snowstorm.

If the shutters and doors are stained, I'd go for a dark cherry. If painted, I agree with the burgundy. Dark green would look good, too.

The house blends so nicely in it's surroundings. It's like it was meant to be there. It has a very cozy warm cottage feeling about it.

Cranberry? Now you have to confuse me by throwing another color into the mix. We really like green, but our friends across the street are painting with green right now, so different would be good.

Paula, there are plenty of teaching jobs here---you could have your pick. Also plenty for your DH in the petroleum/chemical industry. Our house would be MUCH cheaper than yours in Canada too...and you'd have no snow!! The immigration paperwork is just a technicality. We love our big oak too! We're in a neighborhood that is about 30 years old and that was back in the day when they saved the trees and built around them instead of just moving it all down. We have a very shady backyard too.

Ame (and others), the shutters and door are stained a medium stain. I do like the way it looks now. However, our door has a very small crack that you can only see when a sliver of sunlight comes through. We can wood putty, sand, and paint it rather than buy a new one, but it wouldn't stain just right. Also we need new shutters--they aren't looking so great close up. I have to shrink pics so much to post them, but here are links that you can see better:

Ok, help me with the paperwork and we're coming down!

You're probably right about the prices. Here in Alberta things are just out of control. We paid $133000 3 years ago for our house and could easily sell it for over $250000 now. Just crazy!

By Reds9298 on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 01:59 pm:

OMG Paula! I can't imagine that kind of an increase here. It used to be that way here, but in the last 4-5 yrs. the bottom has fallen out. Houses here at the moment are selling for year 2000 prices, isn't that ridiculous?

Pam, I actually think your house has a lot of curb appeal. :) I personally don't like the idea of the green, but definitely the cranberry that someone else mentioned. I think it would brighten it up a bit, but it's already cute. Your walkway really sets it off I think. Good luck!

By Dawnk777 on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 02:26 pm:

Pam, it won't let me view the picture. It says it's private.

I personally don't like the color green. I would go for a cranberry color like others suggested. I just love the big tree and walkway.

By Kaye on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 11:08 pm:

okay well I would two tone it. The roofline that is white should match the door and the shutters a different color. I think I would go with a tan on the door, and then a cranberry/maroon on the shutters.

By Pamt on Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 11:35 pm:

Dawn, I think DH had set the pictures to family only. I don't know how to change it. Sorry.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know what we come up with and post some after pics.
