Good Grief - if peanut butter isn't safe, what is?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2007: Good Grief - if peanut butter isn't safe, what is?
By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 06:24 am:

In the Washington Post this morning:

The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter because of the risk of contamination.

The affected jars have a product code on the lid that begins with the number "2111." The affected jars are made by ConAgra in a single facility in Sylvester, Ga., the FDA said.

Thank you for posting this - we hadn't heard yet. I checked my peanut butter & it is one of them. We live in Arkansas. That is scary.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I feel like "is nothing sacred?"!!!

By Conni on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 09:29 am:

I heard this on the news and was shocked!!! Thanks for posting the link, because I didnt catch all that was said on TV. :)

By Breann on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:35 am:

Crazy :( We use Jif or Skippy, so this time we are safe.

By Luvn29 on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 10:57 am:

We use Peter Pan, ours has the "2111" number on it, and we live in Virginia, one of the main states. My husband had severe diarrhea yesterday and the day before. So bad that he had to come home from work yesterday. But I don't know when the last time he ate the peanut butter was... He's doing okay today, he said, but if he has any more problems with it, I'm taking him to the doctor. We've all passed around a bug this week, so that is why I'm not sure. But hubby got it so much worse than any of us, and ours was more nausea and vomiting, so it may be completely unrelated to us...

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 11:40 am:

I just bought 2 huge jars of Peter Pan peanut butter. Both have the numbers 2111 on them. One jar is still unopened. I wonder if I can take it back and exchange it?

By Tarable on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 11:57 am:

The news story I heard on TV said you can take the lid that has the numbers on it back to the store you bought it from and they will give you your money back or replace it.

I have 6 jars of Peter Pan...I don't like it myself but our kids/grandsons like PB... Sure hope that we can get something for them...I'd be happy with just 6 different jars..I've got 2 crunckie, 3 smooth and one light..not everyone likes the same kind..

By Pandamamaoo4 on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 01:55 pm:

Walmart in our area will take them back and give a refund.

We had two jars with "2111" on them- one of which was nearly empty. I was wondering why one of my kids has had terrible stomach cramps and the other diarrhea. All of my ds's are in a peanut butter kick and have had it almost every day.

Here's a link to the ConAgra site with the address to send the product lids to, and a hotline phone number:
ConAgra

I must say, when I saw the article while skimming the Washington Post (a liberal lefty newspaper that I check on the internet several times a day, I wondered whether I should post about it. I decided that peanut butter is such a staple in families with children (of all ages - Scottt, at 39, has at least 5-6 pb&j sandwiches a week), it was worth posting. I surely didn't expect so many people would be affected.

Now, whether the peanut butter was the cause of anyone's illness described above, I don't know. I would, however, say that if anyone has uncontrollable vomiting or diarrhea, especially young children who are at much greater risk for dehydration, do call your doctor. But, there have been a lot of very nasty stomach viruses going around the past couple of months (one of my bosses was out 3 days last week), so it could just be a virus. Still, if you have Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter with the 2111 code (or any peanut butter with ConAgra anywhere on the label and that code), I would discard the contents (being sure you discard it in such a way that dogs and other animals can't get at it), and get your refund from your grocer or ConAgra.

I was so upset about this. We had two jars of Peter Pan as that is the only brand the kids like - and my youngest lives on peanut butter at the moment.

Naturally we had two of the batch that was recalled.

By Debbie on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 08:44 pm:

Thank God my youngest will only eat Jif Peanut Butter. He lives on peanut butter these days.

You know, my neighbor's kids have been sick a lot lately with stomach stuff. I will have to call her, and see if she knows about this.

By Jjb on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 08:59 pm:

Nearly everyone I know who eats peanut butter in different states has the recalled jars....I don't even want to know how many jars were sold. I'm sure it's a huge number. The plus side (if there is one) is that we now know that Great Value and Peter Pan are the same peanut butter!

By Pandamamaoo4 on Thursday, February 15, 2007 - 09:19 pm:

We took our 6 jars back to Wal-mart and they gave us our money back. I had to get some so this time we walk out with Jiff..gotta have it in the house for kids/grandkids plus DSH. Publix will take Peter Pan back also.
Hope NO ONE get real sick from this!!

They are recalling Dole Cantalopes now too.

WASHINGTON -- Another product is being recalled after testing positive for salmonella.

Dole is recalling more than 6,000 cartons of imported cantaloupes. They were distributed to wholesalers in the eastern U.S. and Quebec between Feb. 5 and Feb. 8.

The recall is the second sparked by salmonella fears this week. On Wednesday, ConAgra recalled its Peter Pan brand and certain batches of Wal-Mart's Great Value house brand of peanut butter after they were linked to a salmonella outbreak that's sickened nearly 300 people in 39 states.

Dole said there have been no reports of illness due to the contaminated cantaloupes, which were grown in Costa Rica.

Consumers with questions should call the store where they bought the cantaloupes or contact Dole.

I'm a choosy mom who chooses JIF. :) I've never bought any other kind, so we are safe.

By Vicki on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 09:09 am:

I heard a blurb on the radio news that Jiff sales are going through the roof. That is all I buy anyway, but I bet the Jiff people are glad it isn't their peanut butter!

By Kaye on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 02:50 pm:

We switched about a year ago to peanut butter and company pb...good yummy stuff. We eat a lot of pb and my youngest tends to get very very sick, so i am glad we weren't affected.

but if you are looking for a new brand, try this..

I always liked Jif, but when we married DH was a Peter Pan fan. Since he eats more PB than I do, I started buying Peter Pan. We had a tainted jar of it so I took it back today. There was no Peter Pan on the shelf! I had a choice between Jif, Skippy, and Smuckers, so I got Jif. Yeah!

By Reds9298 on Saturday, February 17, 2007 - 05:53 pm:

Thank goodness we only use Jif because Natalie eats PB almost everyday. That's really scary!

By Breann on Monday, February 19, 2007 - 03:44 pm:

I read that they just broadened the recall to include ALL peter pan peanut butter purchased after May 2006.

By Jjandmom on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 05:33 am:

the other day I was starting to make cookies and checked the PB and it happened to be Peter Pan with the # on it and I freaked out I said to hubby oh that is cute I was pregnant and and eating that and no wonder why I was sick to my stomach I used to eat a full sandwich and for some reason it was not agreeing with me I would have to lay down cause I felt sick and here it was from the peanut butter. The hubby said get rid of it fast throw it out so I did, I know I could of taken the lids back and got my refund but I didn't want to waste my time or gas to do it I am just glad nothing happened to me while I was pregnant with the baby. The baby will be 3 weeks old tomorrow .

By Sandysmom on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 05:42 am:

OMG, I'm glad you & the baby are ok.

By Vicki on Thursday, February 22, 2007 - 09:03 am:

On the local news last night they said that someone died from what they now believe was the peanut butter!! I think she lives in PA, but bought the peanut butter in Ohio.... I was half asleep when they mentioned it, so I could be off on where she lives.

By Ginny~moderator on Friday, February 23, 2007 - 06:45 am:

Here's an article in the Boston Globe saying that salmonella has indeed been found in jars of peanut butter from households of people who have been sick. According to the article, at least 300 people have been reported as being sickened. And I believe I recall reading of a second death. PeanutButter
