Flat iron question for hairdressers

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2007: Flat iron question for hairdressers
By Bellajoe on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - 11:23 am:

I was at the salon the other day and told the girl that I flat iron my hair just about every day...if i don't, it's all over the place.

She asked me if I put anything in my hair to protect it since I iron it every day. Then i think we got distracted and I never got to ask her what I should use. I never put anything on it to protect it. So far it's not damaged or dry or anything. But i do want to prevent that from happening.

does anyone know what i should put on it to protect it?

TIA!

I'm not a hairdresser, but I do use a flat iron every day :) I use the CHI, which is supposedly one of the better ones for your hair, as opposed to the kind you buy from wal-mart and such.

My hairdresser recommended "textureline serum". It's a small white pump bottle. I bought it at a beauty supply store because it was cheaper than at the salon. I put it on just before I blowdry.

I'm anxious to hear what other hairdressers recommend :)

Preferably something with silicone in it. There are a lot of nice styling cremes on the market. Sunsilk products are fabulous. I think the one in the pink bottle is to tame frizz. You'll have to read the bottle.

Everytime you apply heat to your hair, be it blow drying, ironing, or hot rollers, you damage it. The product puts a protective layer between your hair and the iron.

When I went to hairdressing school, curling irons were the big thing. We were told to spray the hair with hairspray first, before using the curling iron. The instructors used to say, "Curl the spray, not the hair".

Thermasilk and Aussie both have great heat protecting sprays. I think the Aussie one is less "heavy" which I need for my fine hair that I straighten about 5 out of 7 days. My sister swears by the Thermasilk one for her thick, semi-curly hair that she straightens daily. HTH:)
