Fair Rate for Tutoring Services?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: Fair Rate for Tutoring Services?
By Zoie on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 08:59 pm:

Hi, I have been asked by a parent to teach her child to read. She asked me to figure out what a fair rate is, and whatever it is, she'll pay it. I have no idea what to ask her for. Considering that I'm not out to make a lot of money on this (I'd actually originally offered to do it for free but the mother insisted on paying), does anyone have any recommendations based on experience either tutoring yourselves, or having your children tutored? Thanks!

It depends on where you live, and your level of education and experience. I live in Northern Westchester County, NY. Tutors here with a master degree earn upward of $65 an hour.

When I was tutoring in Brooklyn, I charged $20 per session )which was anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. I had once client who I saw every day just to help with homework and basic stuff a parent would do, but the parent had no time. I was a friend and only charged $50 for the week.

So, ask around and charge what you feel comfortable with.

What method will you be using? If you're certified in Lindamood-Bell, Wilson, and similar programs, you can get more. I paid $50/hour for a certified Phonographix tutor (LMB based), but unfortunately she wasn't able to teach my child to read.

I pay my tutor $25/hr, and the last one charged the same.

I paid $35 per hour last year for an Algebra tutor and she was a 19 yr old college student recommended by the guidance office at the high school. If it's a certified teacher that's tutoring they get around $70 per hour.

I tutor middle and high school math and I've been certified in 4 different states...I charge $35 for high school and $30 for middle school.

I think, at that level, $20-$25 an hour is fair. Especially if you offered for free but she insists on paying.

I'm big on charging less so that the student truly benefits. We all know we don't teach for the money and that's where your heart is already... :)

One bit of advice, make sure you exchange cell phone/home numbers in case you or they have to cancel a session. I also ask for any history with the student/IEP's, etc.
